Another blunder: contradictory pages

Namaskar,
Please pay attention to the following two quotes - one highlighted in yellow and one in green. These quotes are from our AM books, but, unfortunately, the yellow quote contradicts the green quote, and vice-versa.

The overall idea of the yellow quote is that a volcanic eruption occurred in the Ananda Nagar region nearly 1 million years ago and the lava and debris created mass destruction in the local area. The villagers were terrified by this catastrophe and could not understand why this happened. So they concluded that goddess Candii is furious. So she is burning us with fire. This is the overall idea of the quote highlighted below in yellow.

QUOTE #1: Ananda Marga philosophy says, “About 900,000 to one million years ago, the top of the Dimdiha Hill, near Anandanagar, was blown off by a volcanic eruption. The debris fell within a radius of about two miles, killing all of the people and animals living there. Due to the abrupt change in temperature, they were fossilized. Uneducated people called this explosion the work of the goddess Candii. This kind of [[volcanic]] eruption is called “jvala-mukhi” in Saḿskrta.” (1)

That concludes yellow quote; now see the green quote.

The overall idea of the green quote is that goddess Candii is a mythological figure that came into existence around 1300 to 1400 years ago. So goddess Candii is a very recent creation. Before 1400 years ago, nobody even knew of the name goddess Candii because the Candii goddess did not even exist.  This is the overall idea of the quote highlighted below in green.

QUOTE #2: Ananda Marga philosophy says, “The worship of the goddess Durgá is based mainly on the Márkańd́eya Puráńa, and to a lesser extent on the Devii Puráńa, the Káliká Puráńa, the Brhatnandikeshavara Puráńa, the Duragábhaktitaraunginii, the Deviibhágavat, etc. None of these books is older than 1300 or 1400 years. Seven hundred shlokas [couplets] were collected from those books and gathered together, and that constituted the abridged Márkańd́eya Puráńa, which is also known as Durgásaptashatii, or more colloquially, Shrii Shrii Cańd́ii. None of these works existed at the time of Shiva.” (2)

That concludes the green quote. Now see the conclusion.


Conclusion

[A]  The quote - highlighted above in yellow - projects the idea that 1 million years ago terrified villagers of the Ananda Nagar region attributed the volcanic eruption and destruction to goddess Candii.

[B] The quote - highlighted above in green - projects the idea that goddess Candii came into existence only 1400 years ago.

[C] Hence, the above yellow and green quotes are contradicting each other. The yellow quote claims that goddess Candii is at least 1 million years old and the green quote claims that goddess Candii is no more than 1400 years old. This is a huge difference - the gap is 998,600 years - at minimum. So unfortunately, the yellow quote contradicts the green quote, and vice-versa.

Every margii knows that Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji never speaks anything that is contradictory.

Bear in mind, our Ananda Marga books are sold openly in the public market; when non-margiis read this blunder they will not have great respect for Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji. That is unfortunate and pathetic.

Note 1: The two worst things to ruin a book


Here are the two worst things anyone can do to any chapter or book:

#1: Spoil that chapter or book by making it self-contradictory;

#2: When due to sloppiness such a contradiction has been injected into the text, readers will think the writer does not know the subject matter.

These fatal flaws in our Ananda Marga literature are the direct result of the sloppiness and carelessness of Tiljla publications Dept. They are inexcusable. By these blunders, they have ruined the status of Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji.

Baba never tells anything that is self-contradictory. Unfortunately the Tiljala Publications Dept made a  serious blunder in our Ananda Marga books. They printed two paragraphs that are completely inconsistent with one another.

Specifically, with regards to our tandava dance, those publishers have printed contradictory statements in two different chapters of two different books.


Request #1:

First look at quote #1 (highlighted below in yellow): They wrote the skull and dambaru are held by the tandava dancer in opposite hands.


Request #2:

Next look at quote #2 (highlighted below in green): They wrote that the skull and dambaru are held by the tandava dancer in the same hand.


Here is how Tiljala Publications published quote #1:

Quote #1: "What are the things that find a place in the dancer’s hands? The dancer, may, for instance, hold a human skull in the left hand and a dagger in the right hand. Or in the daytime one may, if one wishes, hold a snake in the left hand. [At night] one may hold a d́ambaru [a small drum shaped like an hourgzlass] or a mashál [torch] in the right hand. One can recognize everything by the light of a torch and can understand by the sound of a drum. Otherwise at night, neither a skull nor a snake can be recognized. In the left hand, there is the symbol of destruction and death." (1)


Here is how Tiljala Publications published quote #2:

Quote #2: "Ta'n'd'ava is a heroic dance, showing the fight between life and death. The knife represents life, represents your vital stamina, and the skull represents the death that wants to destroy you. You are fighting against death with your weapon, be it a knife or a trishula (trident). And as per the rule, during the day, if one so desires, one may use a live snake in place of the skull; and at night one may use a fire masha'la [torch] or a d'ambaru [small drum]. This is the rule. So ta'n'd'ava represents the eternal fight, the fight for survival, the fight to maintain existence, the fight to establish oneself as a man in this world." (2)

The contradiction in these above two paragraphs spoiled the topic and made the subject matter unintelligible for any sincere reader. 


The two worst things to ruin a book

Here are the two worst things anyone can do to any chapter or book:
#1: Spoil that chapter or book by making it self-contradictory;
#2: Ruin any chapter or book in the name of the author whereby the author is viewed as unintelligent.
Tragically, both of these fatal flaws were injected by Tiljala Publications with regards to Sadguru Baba’s above guidelines on tandava.

Namaskar,
On 18 July 1979 in Visakhapatnam, at morning general darshan, Sadguru Baba delivered a discourse that was printed in Ánanda Vacanámrtam part 13, English Edn (2011) as  “Significance of Yoga.” It is chapter 19 and starts on page 123.


What Baba actually spoke

Now let us see what Sadguru Baba actually spoke that day.

    “There are fifty broad propensities. And actually, more than one thousand sub-propensities.” 


Our Tiljala Publishers wrote odd instead of broad

See below what our Tiljala publishers printed in book. In particular please pay attention to the term highlighted in red: odd. Because those publishers "odd" instead of "broad."

The publishers wrote:            

    “There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty odd propensities, and actually, more than one thousand sub-propensities.”

Sadguru Baba actually spoke:

    “There are fifty broad propensities. And actually, more than one thousand sub-propensities.” 

Here is how our Tiljala publishers printed it in the book, Ananda Vacanamrtam part 13.

    “There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty odd propensities, and actually, more than one thousand sub-propensities.”


What they published was wrong

So in the book they changed  term "broad" to "odd." Yet these two terms do not convey the same idea and Guru’s original words should not be changed. So what they did was wrong.

Thus the publishers are writing that Baba says that all 50 human propensities are odd.

And remember, all this was done in the name of Baba, Lord Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji - as the publishers printed this book in His name.

Here for your review is what our Tiljala Publishers wrote:

    “The citta, the mind stuff, the mind of human beings, has got so many propensities, so many vrttis, it moves here there, there and there. There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty odd propensities.”

And here is what Baba actually spoke:

    “The citta, the mind stuff, the mind of a human being, it has got so many propensities, so many vrttis. It moves here and there, here and there. There are fifty broad propensities.” 

Note: You may have remarked that there are numerous words that are not the same - but we ignored these points and focused exclusively on how they changed the term broad to odd. Because that is the main blunder. At the same time no one should think that all these other word changes are typos. It is not like that. The above line in yellow is exactly what Guru spoke. And those Tiljala publishers made various changes in addition to their main blunder.

Conclusion: broad - not odd

Verily the term Baba actually spoke was broad - not odd. The term broad reflects Baba’s guideline that there is a range of 50 propensities.

But the publishers utterly missed this idea and instead published the word ”odd” - instead of ”broad” -  which carries an entirely different meaning.

It is sad that those in charge of printing and publishing Guru’s divine discourses are making such egregious errors. Any true disciple of Baba will easily understand that Guru never describes the human propensities as being “odd.” For example there are propensities that goad human beings towards Parama Purusa, encourage devotion and love and affection for the entire creation - i.e. neo-humanism. How can one say that such propensities are odd. This goes against the fundamentals of Ananda Marga.

For example here are some propensities that are very essential for spiritual life: (a)  dharma [psycho-spiritual longing], (b) mokśa [spiritual longing], (c) áshá [hope], (d) ceśt́á [endeavour], (e) mamatá [mine-ness, love], (f) anutápa [repentance], (g) oṋm [acoustic root of creation, preservation, dissolution], (h) phat́ [practication, i.e., putting a theory into practice)], (i) vaśat́ [welfare in the subtler sphere], (j) namah [surrender to the Supreme], and (k) amrta [sweet expression], pará [spiritual knowledge]. Who can claim that such propensities are odd. No one - as these propensities are vital for any sadhaka to gain success.

Yet it never occurred to the publishers that what they printed was wrong and misleading. They could not recognise that they were misrepresenting Guru by writing “fifty odd propensities.” That is why the situation is sad. They are printing and publishing Baba’s books but they have no idea what they are doing. That is why they are prone to making gross errors in the name of Sadguru Baba.

The discourse, “Significance of Yoga”, Ánanda Vacanámrtam part 13, English Edn (2011) ch 19, pg 123, was published by Ac Sugatananda Avt and he was also the one who worked on re-edting and re-transcribing this discourse.

Tiljala publisher wrote "odd" instead of "broad." So it got ruined.

To provide some context, some synonyms of the word odd are: strange, peculiar, weird, queer, funny, bizarre, abnormal, eccentric, unusual, unconventional, outlandish, quirky, zany.

Hence, what the publishers printed may be interpreted by readers as:

There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty outlandish propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty eccentric propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty bizarre propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty quirky propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty weird propensities.

There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty strange propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty queer propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty funny propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty abnormal propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty unusual propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty unconventional propensities.
There are fifty, not only fifty, fifty zany propensities.

These are the 13 or more ways that typical readers may interpret the word odd and apply that to the published statement.

As every Ananda Margii knows, Sadguru Baba’s discourses are rational and logical in all respects. There is no confusion, ambiguity, or contradiction in His divine teachings. Unfortunately, Tiljala Publications is not always able to maintain this standard when printing the books. See here this blunder they committed.

In the discourse “Brahma Cakra”, Ananda Vacanamrtam - 33, page 7, the publishers started the paragraph like this:

"But where there is no movement, we say those items moving round that Nucleus...”

Please pay attention to the first eleven words: "But where there is no movement, we say those items moving."

The sentence is grossly contradictory.

Here it is again for your review: "But where there is no movement, we say those items moving round that Nucleus..."

As you can see, the sentence is wholly self-contradictory.

What those publishers wrote is ridiculous. First they claim that “there is no movement”, and then they claim that those very stationary "items [are] moving.” The statement is grossly contradictory. Things that are stationary do not move, yet they say those stationary items are moving. Any primary school student will see that this sentence is contradictory. One need not know the whole of Ananda Marga ideology to recognise this.

Here again is their sentence for your review:

“But where there is no movement, we say those items moving
round that Nucleus are passing through the realm of time, space and person; but the Nucleus doesn’t pass through time, space and person.”

I think everyone can understand this obvious point - if not re-read this letter or write us with your query.

Summary: The discourse “Brahma Cakra”, Ananda Vacanamrtam - 33, was given by Bábá in English, in Salem (Tamil Nadu, India). But Tiljala Publications could not properly transcribe the discourse. That is why there are contradictory sentences in the printed discourse.

The purpose of this letter is to make Bábá's printed discourses authentic and dogma-free. This is not about any group conflict etc; this is an issue of authenticity. The duty of every disciple of Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji is to keep watch on the purity of Guru's printed books.


Distorted scripture is the cause of division

In the religions of the world, long after, sometimes hundreds of years after a seer or sage—Christ, Buddha, Mohammed—left the world, their followers wrote down what they thought He said. And there was disagreement about it, which only multiplied and caused division into sects. Bábá's shástra is different from that of the religions of the world because He has Himself dictated it. And yet despite this, the same schisms as happened in the religions, will go on escalating in Ánanda Márga as well if we do not clean our shástra.

Division into sects has happened with every religious and spiritual movement in the history of humanity. The difference in Ánanda Márga is that Bábá is Táraka Brahma and He has dictated His own scripture. But that has to be protected from distortion or it will lose its functional value. It is the duty of Ánanda Márgiis throughout the world to see to it that our Ánanda Márga shástra remains intact, pure, flawless. It is the cause of our unity for ages to come.
