Only Bengali Sweets Mentioned: Mumbai and Ludhiana Sweets Removed

Moderators' Note: H and EC groups do not publish their own original books but rather only reprint the books which the Tiljala group publishes. Because of this, H and EC groups are not considered responsible for the below-discussed distortion. For this reason only our Tiljala Publishers' work is being discussed here. In the future if H and EC groups commit similar mistakes, they will also be held responsible.

Distortion in Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12: Part-C

Serious Errors in a Passage

Namaskár brothers and sisters,

On 8th June of the year 1979, Bábá delivered a Hindi discourse in Mumbai. (1) In this discourse, Bábá presented a very intricate devotional topic in a simple to understand style. The original Hindi discourse given by Bábá was never published. AMPS Publishers translated this discourse into English and published it in Ánanda Vacanámrtam part 12 (henceforth, referred to as AV12), first in 1980 and then in a highly touted second edition in 2008. (2) There are a large number of deviations in this English translation from the original discourse given by Bábá.

This article is the third of a series in which each of the deviations will be analyzed and presented to Ánanda Márgiis across the globe. Some of the deviations are of extremely serious nature and completely mar the essence of Bábá’s teachings.

Color Coding

Violet color means text published by AMPS Tiljala group.
Red color means frankly distorted term published by AMPS Tiljala group.
Green color means original As-Is Hindi transcription from Bábá's recording. The translation of this into English by me is also given below in green.

Excerpt from Discourse Full of Distortion

Here below is a paragraph taken directly from the Tiljala AMPS publication of the discourse.

Behind all phenomenal, actional, faculties lies the noumenal entity. And behind even this noumenal entity [there is an entity] that may be called “supra-noumenal”. Everything that comes within the scope of time, place and person is charming. So noumenal entities also undergo metamorphosis. If you research the noumenal causes, you will discover the root cause behind all actions. What is noumenal in the first phase becomes phenomenal in the next phase, and so on.

The above paragraph and the one that was supposed to follow it contain multiple distortions which are outlined here, and then detailed below. In brief:
  1. Deviation One: the word charming is an extreme distortion.
  2. Deviation Two: the paragraph which follows the above para in Bábá's recorded discourse is totally missing from the Tiljala publication.
  3. Deviation Three: the above paragraph is a mere summary written by the Tiljala Publishers, rather than an actual translation of what Bábá gave in Hindi.

True Paragraphs from Original Discourse Delivered by Bábá in Hindi

This is the exact transcription of the original passage from the recording of Bábá's discourse.

Translation of Above Original Hindi from Recording into English

For those who cannot read Hindi, the meaning of the above sentences in English is as follows. Here, I have translated in a very careful, literal way so readers will understand the exact meaning of what Bábá has stated:

So, this noumenal, which is behind phenomenal; That is also moving, that is also on the move, that is also mobile. So, you found a noumenal cause behind the actional world. Now, you go behind that noumenal cause, see there is one more super-noumenal working behind that noumenal. Right. How ? i.e. In what sense is it so? Well, that noumenal is also based on time, place, and person.”

Like here, to make you understand, suppose you say – ‘I like shrikhand best, it is good.’ So, now if you yourself went to Ludhiana then you may decide you like Rájmá more than shrikhand. Thus, Rájmá has changed according to ‘place’. So, your noumenal entity has undergone a certain metamorphosis. A change has come in the noumenal entity due to change in place. So, these noumenal causes, you should research them.”

Deviation One: Use of Word “charmingby Tiljala AMPS Publishers

In the following sentenceEverything that comes within the scope of time, place and person is charming.” The word “charming” just pops up suddenly. There is no relevance of the word charming in the context of this whole discourse, let alone this paragraph. Let us see why it is so.

One word is not on its own; it is part of a sentence which is in turn part of a paragraph, which is in turn is part of an expression of an idea. So when one pivotal word is wrong like this, it has a negative effect on the entire idea.

One of the central ideas of the discourse in AV12 and this very paragraph is that the world is caláymán (ever-changing). The way we can ascertain the ever-changing nature of anything is by looking at the fact that, that particular thing is dependent on time, place and person. Here, the Publishers have confused the idea of being “ever-changing”, replacing it instead with “charming. They have Bábá saying that everything that comes within the scope of time, place, and person is charming instead of ever-changing.

The shocking thing is that despite two official editions one in 1980 and then the next amidst great pomp and show in 2008, this error still lurks in the discourse. Such confusing errors are extremely misleading for readers; that these errors can remain in a discourse over several editions is not good and indeed extremely disturbing.

Deviation Two: Exclusion of a Running Example on Favorite Food Item “Shrikhand” by Tiljala AMPS Publishers

Bábá has earlier in this discourse given an example of shrikhand, a dessert made of yoghurt popular in Mumbai where this discourse was delivered. That section is eliminated from the Tiljala Publication and has been discussed in an earlier posting. (3) Bábá explained in that passage that sometimes someone may like to eat the sweet rasagolla, whereas at other times they will prefer their local sweet (that of Mumbai), shrikhand—and this change in preference is brought about due to changes in mind itself. So the noumenal cause of selecting a particular sweet—the mind—changes with time.

Bábá further demonstrated in that passage, that even people in Mumbai will not like to eat shrikhand every day all the time—they will prefer variety. Thus through this simple example Bábá showed that taste preference as a noumenal cause of food selection is dependent on time and therefore relative and changeable rather than absolute, permanent, fixed.

In the current portion of the discourse Bábá now continues another aspect of the same example to describe the influence on mind of change in place. Bábá shows that a person takes an action of eating a particular item like shrikhand because the desire to eat that item stems from a particular point in his or her mind. So, it appears that, that desire is the noumenal cause behind taking the action of eating shrikhand. However, Bábá is telling that if a person lives in Mumbai he may like shrikhand more but if he himself goes to live in a different place like Ludhiana (a city in Punjab state of India where people like to eat Rájmá), he may like to eat some other sweet instead, Rájmá in case of this example. Bábá is giving this simple example to describe the influence of place on apparent noumenal entity. AMPS Tiljala publishers have omitted this running example throughout the discourse.

Here again is the translation from the Hindi recording of Bábá's example. This has been completely left out of the Tiljala Publishers' English discourse:

Like here, to make you understand, suppose you say – ‘I like shrikhand best, it is good.’ So, now if you yourself went to Ludhiana then you may decide you like Rájmá more than shrikhand. Thus, Rájmá has changed according to ‘place’. So, your noumenal entity has undergone a certain metamorphosis. A change has come in the noumenal entity due to change in place. So, these noumenal causes, you should research them.”

Bábá's Main Teaching Left Out of Tiljala Publication

So here in the above two translated paragraphs from the original Hindi, Bábá has given two important phases of a teaching—
  1. Bábá first teaches a principle: An apparent causal entity—a person's mind—is actually in turn influenced by “change in place”. Ultimately the Supra Noumenal Entity i.e. Parama Puruśa is the cause behind everything it is true. But in the above passage left out by the Tiljala Publishers, Bábá is explaining that there are intermediary noumenal causes as well. Here Bábá teaches that although it appears a person is the cause of their own taste preferences, but in reality “change in place” is a higher intermediary noumenal cause, which results in change in taste preference in a person's mind.
  2. Then Bábá gives the example of a person moving from Mumbai to Ludhiana to illustrate that due to change in place there is resultant change in a person's taste preferences. This example is given to illustrate the principle that “'person' as an apparent noumenal entity (i.e. here a human being's taste preferences) is in turn subject to the higher noumenal entity, “change in place”.

Bábá's two paragraphs—the first para explaining the principle, and the second providing the example—the points in both are completely left out of the published discourse.

Bengalization of Sweets

Only Bengali Sweets Mentioned:
Mumbai and Ludhiana Sweets Removed

Of the three sweets mentioned in this discourse by Bábá—rasagolla of Bengal, shrikhand of Mumbai, and Rájmá of Punjab—the Tiljala group has included Bábá's mention of the example about rasagolla. So the beginning of this running example was included. But then the entire development and flourishing of this example through the discourse, where Bábá discusses sweets in Mumbai and Ludhiana, is removed altogether. Here our Tiljala Publishers have again demonstrated their Bengali sentiment. Otherwise why did they not keep the section about Mumbai sweets and eliminate the section about West Bengal sweets? It is obvious that they wish to see the pracára i.e. propagation and fame of their own state's sweets, which is reflective of narrow groupist sentiment.

This is yet another example that our Kolkata group wants to show that Bábá's prime interest was in showing the greatness of Bengali culture. In this way the Tiljala Publishers try always to sculpt what they print in such a way that it makes it look like Bábá talked mostly about Bengal. They want that future generations will come to believe this was Bábá's main goal: to propagate the greatness of Bengal. Otherwise what was the need to remove Bábá's simple stories involving the sweets of other areas. It is conspicuous deletion of all things non-Bengali.

And this is a systemic problem, pervading the publications of Bábá's discourses by Tiljala group. A recent prior posting to this Network pointed out how in another discourse Tiljala group highlighted Bábá's recitation of a Bengali poem illustrating techniques of sound repetition, and they suppressed Bábá's use of similar examples in Hindi and English to illustrate the same techniques. (4)

Deviation Three: Entire Passage is Rewritten Rather Than Translated.

Here is one critical point: our AMPS Publishers have a duty to reproduce in print what Bábá has said in His discourse. If the book is printed in the same language as the discourse, then it should be verbatim “As Is”, i.e. exactly what Bábá has said. And if the book is a different language as here, then the translation should be faithful and correlate closely, sentence by sentence. Just because a book is printed in translation does not give the Publishers right to freely remove passages altogether, and print others in mere summary.

Yet in this discourse such license has been taken. If you look at the two paragraphs transcribed from the original Hindi recording, the first has been recreated in mere summary, and the second paragraph eliminated altogether.

Looking at the first paragraph: there is no correlation between the sentences in Bábá's original Hindi passage, and the sentences in the so-called translation printed by Tiljala group. The Publishers have wholly re-written and thereby presented a mere summary of what Bábá stated, paraphrasing Bábá’s teachings rather than translating them. In the course of so doing, they have also introduced content into the para from other parts of the discourse, so that it is almost completely unrecognizable.

By summarizing and paraphrasing rather than translating, the translator has transgressed his rights as translator. He has throughout authored his own sentences rather than translating Bábá's. There is nothing wrong in interpreting shástra and making it palatable for the masses if the original version is highly condensed in meaning. But in such a case the readers are entitled to know that what they are reading is an interpretation or explanation, and not the translation of Guru’s words.

So the published version of this discourse in AV12 is an interpretation or explanation or summary of Bábá’s discourse—not a translation. This is an all-important fact, that the Tiljala published so-called “discourse” is really a summary and explanation of what Bábá said, rather than what Bábá actually said. These are not Guru's own sentences, Guru's own words.

This should be made clear by the AMPS publishers to avoid confusion and misunderstanding as to what Bábá has really said versus what is the Publication Department's interpretation. Otherwise Márgii readers, seeing such a sentence as Everything that comes within the scope of time, place and person is charming, will be confused as to what Bábá wants to say.

Conclusion: Passage Full of Distortions and Deletions

In this posting several distortions in the AV12 discourse have been brought to the notice of general Márgiis.

Firstly, a gross and misleading distortion has been created by use of the word charming. This distortion has persisted through two editions of the AV12 book.Bábá is telling that everything in this created Universe comes within the scope of time, place, and person; everything is changing and transitory. And in place of transitory, the Tiljala Publishers placed the word charming.

Secondly, Bábá's important and colorful example using local sweets to show the influence of change of place on apparent noumenal entity, has been excluded by the AMPS Tiljala publishers.

Thirdly, it is noted that the discourse published in AV12 by AMPS Tiljala publishers is actually an interpretation or summary of Bábá’s discourse instead of Guru's own words. However, this fact is not being communicated to the readers. The published discourse is introduced to the readers as Bábá’s own words. An excerpt from the transcript of Bábá’s As-Is Hindi discourse is provided in this posting for reference.

As Ánanda Márgiis it is our duty to understand, appreciate, internalize, and propagate Bábá’s true teachings. In order to fulfill this duty, that Ánanda Má́rga scripture which we study and propagate, has to be proper. If our scripture itself is distorted, then what we learn and propagate will itself be distorted. So when we see that our shástra is indeed full of errors introduced by our Publishers, then it becomes our duty to point this out and put pressure to get our books fixed. This will prevent people from getting misguided and thereby true pracára of Bábá’s teachings can take place.

Sincerely,

Bhakti

2. Highly Touted

The 2008 edition is highly touted as having been checked, revised, and upgraded by Ác. Sarvátmánanda Avt. Yet there are a large number of deviations in this English translation, from the original discourse given by Bábá.

First published in Ánanda Vacanámrtam Part 12 in 1980, this text was republished in 2008 as part of a much celebrated project taken on by a special NY and Berlin Sector team in the Kolkata Publishing Department; Kirit ji was a member of this overseas team. Despite the involvement of this senior team and the supervision of Ác. Sarvátmánanda Avt, the new 2008 edition is afflicted with numerous distortions and flagrantly missing text.

From the Moderators—

Moderators Note 1.

Request for Volunteers

We make a special request for volunteers to help in this work of producing and reviewing the “as is” discourses. Márgii volunteers are needed from all countries around the world, to help with translating the “as is” discourses into the various languages, and also to help with translating postings about distortions so that all Márgiis around the world can be made aware. Comparing the “as is” discourses to the discourses published by our AMPS is a big job, and help here is also needed. We welcome a hand from any and all who are inspired and interested to serve in the protection of the discourses of Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji.

Moderators Note 2.

Need for Audio Recordings

In order to produce “As Is” discourses, there is a need for audio cassettes of Bábá's discourses. These are treated with the utmost of care as we do the job for which the recordings were made: discourse transcription. So any who have recordings of Bábá's discourses are encouraged to contact us in order to get the recording transcribed in “As Is” fashion.

Moderators Note 3:

Only Goal of Ánanda Má́rga Discourses Network:

To Protect Bábá's Discourses

This Ánanda Má́rga Discourses Network does not have any agenda against any group. Its only goal is to repair and protect Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's holy discourses so they will remain for the present and future humanity.

Moderators Note 4:

Fix Bábá's Discourses Now or Never

If we remain passive onlookers and do not fix the negative trends of introducing distortion into Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's discourses and do not bring the printed discourses up to the proper standard now, it will become impossible to change this in the future. And even if in future some sincere Ánanda Márgiis will try, they will be treated as enemies. Because this is the way religion works. Today one cannot teach the devotees of Lord Krśńa that He has nothing to do with cows; they will never believe it. In the same way, Ánanda Márgiis will become used to the wrong teachings in our AM books and they will not like to give them up. They will think that whatever was there at the end of the twentieth century, that was the gold standard for all time. And it should be kept and maintained. So we don't have any time: it is either now or never. The clock is ticking: If we do not get Bábá's discourses fixed now, it will be impossible to do so later. And that will cause bloodshed and more division on the basis of the various versions of Bábá's teachings and their explanations. History bears testimony to this, that all the religions have similarly broken into multiple factions, groups and subgroups on the basis of differences in scripture interpretations. Bábá wanted to eliminate such problems, and that is why Bábá's discourses are recorded. But unfortunately, those recordings are not being published properly. This matter is very serious.

"Towards The Noumenal Entity": Printed Discourse Passage Highly Misleading

The Discourse "Towards The Noumenal Entity" was delivered by Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji in Hindi, but never printed by the Tiljala group Publishers in that language. Instead, they "translated" it into English-- but the discourse is hardly a translation. It is fully of summarized and distorted passages. Such a typical passage is shown in the below scan from Ánanda Vacanámrtam part 12. Here the paragraph with the vertical red line is being highlighted.

1. The entire paragraph is a a mere summary rather than an actual translation of what Bábá gave in Hindi.

2. The word "charming", underlined in red, represents a gross distortion of Bábá's message.

3. The paragraph that should have followed this one, is missing altogether. It is represented in the below image by the red rectangle. In that missing paragraph Bábá is giving an example of how someone who lives in Mumbai and therefore prefers the local Mumbai sweet Shrikhand, changes their preference when they move to Ludhiana, to the Punjabi sweet Rajma. The Tiljala Publishers removed all this, in order to highlight Bábá's discussion of the Bengali sweet Rasagolla in an earlier paragraph.

First Para Left Out of Surat DMC Discourse & Wrong Name Given

Moderators' Note: H and EC groups do not publish their own original books but rather only reprint the books which the Tiljala group publishes. Because of this, H and EC groups are not considered responsible for the below-discussed distortion. For this reason only our Tiljala Publishers' work is being discussed here. First Para Left Out of Surat DMC Discourse

& Wrong Name Given

Namaskar,
DMC Discourses: Most Important, and Named by Bábá

When Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's discourses are published, they should be published with a view toward reproducing every word He has given start to finish. Yet here is another discourse in which that has not been done. Indeed the distortion in this discourse is particularly prominent as it is a DMC discourse. As many know, DMC or Dharma Mahácakra discourses Bábá used to give before large gatherings of Má́rgiis. They are longer discourses, and these discourses Bábá would title Himself, declaring the subject of discourse in the first sentence. When publishing the discourse, the name given by Bábá in that very first sentence would become the printed title of the discourse.

First Para Missing From DMC Discourse

Yet in the DMC discourse of 26 September 1966 DMC, Surat, virtually the entire first paragraph is missing from the discourse as printed by the Tiljala group in our AMPS publication, Subháśita Saḿgraha Part 24. Because the Tiljala group left out the first paragraph, they did not have Bábá's proclamation of the title of the discourse. It is like a human being having a body but missing the head; without the head, the body is guide-less. As the head is critically important to the body, so the title of the discourse is vitally important. It is the announcement of what is to follow; it guides the reader as to which direction the discourse is moving. And that guideline given by Táraka Brahma Himself, is missing.
No Translation Issues: All They Had To Do Was Type

As the discourse was given in English in Surat, Gujarat, there are not even any issues of translation for the English publication; no such complexities exist. It was simply a matter of typing straight what Bábá has said on the recording, and printing it—and this was not done.
Wrong Name Given To DMC Discourse

On the recording, in the first sentence Bábá grandly proclaims the subject of the discourse to be, "The Supreme Consciousness And The Cogitative Faculty." Because the Tiljala group left out almost the entire first paragraph of this important discourse, they had no idea what name Bábá had given it. So they guessed and gave their own name—“The Supreme Cognition”. To this day, the discourse is printed under the wrong name, known by Má́rgiis all over the world by this incorrect name, “The Supreme Cognition”.

Publishers Failed to Inform Má́rgiis

Made Up Name

No Publisher's Note

Knowing that Bábá names DMC discourses Himself, Ánanda Má́rgiis are right to presume that this is the name given by Bábá. For in the printed book, the AMPS Publishers have given no indication whatsoever that due to leaving out the first paragraph they had to make up their own name for the discourse.
DMC Discourse Takes on Special Importance

Some discourses Bábá gives are very short—two minutes, three minutes—but this Surat DMC is over fifty minutes. It is a landmark discourse of great importance. Even short discourses of Táraka Brahma should be treated as of critical importance; but fifty-minute discourses take on particular significance in the body of Ánanda Marga teachings, as they give an all-inclusive, full-bodied view of the subject under consideration.

In discourses given locally before fewer Má́rgiis, Bábá often speaks informally, interacting and joking with the Má́rgiis as He graciously teaches. These smaller discourses have a special charm of their own no doubt. But the DMC discourses are formally presented and momentous in scope and proportion. They take a special seat in the body of Ánanda Marga shástra. And to think that our own AMPS Publishers have dealt in such a callous way, firstly leaving out the initial paragraph; and secondly making up their own name for the discourse without giving any indication of the same via a Publishers' Note, is a serious matter.
Why Kolkata Publishers Left Out First Paragraph

And Named Discourse Themselves

Why the Kolkata Publishers left out the first paragraph of the discourse, only they can say. But the fact remains that the recording was made of the entire discourse, and was therefore as or more available to them than to anyone else. If due to carelessness the Kolkata Publishers misplaced or lost parts of their recording, that is not at all acceptable for a Publishing Department. And if they intentionally left out virtually the entire first paragraph, that is even worse.
Here is the Missing Real First Paragraph of the Discourse

Here below is the actual first paragraph which Bábá has given in the recording of the Surat DMC—

The Supreme Consciousness And The Cogitative Faculty
26 September 1966 DMC, Surat

[Hindi bhajana: “Bahároṋ phul barsáo, merá bhagaván áyá hae.” bhajana continues for six minutes thirty seconds.] (1)

[cassette is cut for 3 seconds] (2) [The subject of today's discourse is]—"The Supreme Consciousness and the Cogitative Faculty". The Supreme Cognition is the Transcendental Entity, and fundamentally, there are two principles in the universe. The Cognitive Principle, and the Operative Principle. The Cognitive Principle is the transcendental one. And the Operative Principle is its innate principle. That's why this Cognitive Principle is called "Náráyańa". You know, in Saḿskrta language, ayana means "shelter". The book in which Ráma has been sheltered, is Rámáyańa. "Ráma" + "ayana". Similarly, the Cosmic Operative Principle, or the Cosmic Creative Principle, the Causal Matrix, has been sheltered in the Transcendental Entity, the Supreme Cognition.

Shortcomings of Beginning of Discourse

Kolkata Version Compared to “As Is” Version

Note that—
  1. The place and date of the discourse are the same i.e. they are renderings of the very same discourse—but the names are different. The name at the top of the “As Is” discourse is given directly by Bábá. The name given at the top of the published version has been concocted by the Kolkata Publishers.
  2. The first and only sentence in the opening paragraph of the published Tiljala discourse (shown in red), is the final sentence of the real, “As Is” first paragraph (shown above in green). All the sentences prior to that last sentence of the “As Is” first paragraph are missing from the Kolkata group's printed discourse in Subháśita Saḿgraha Part 24.
  3. Despite going against Bábá's rule and naming the DMC themselves, the Kolkata Publishing group did not put a Publisher's Note about this important fact in their publication, Subháśita Saḿgraha Part 24.

Bábá's Words: For the Entire Universe

Bábá has said that His words, His teachings are for the entire universe, not just for a small select group of people. Here are his original words on this given on 14 October 1978 in Patna —

"हम बोलते हैं सबों के लिए, दुनिया के सभी मनुष्यों के लिए ...हम बोलते हैं तो सब के लिए,दुनिया के | पटना के बीस-पचास आदमी के लिए तो नहीं बोलते हैं | ”

Here is the English Translation:

"I speak for everyone, for every human being in the world. I do not speak merely for twenty or twenty-five people in Patna."

As Bábá's words are “for every human being in the world,” so it is the duty of our AMPS Publishers to take their assigned work very seriously. Our AMPS Publishers are to faithfully carry out the charge of reproducing Bábá's spoken words in print for all the universe. As that most noble duty has not been and is not being carried out, it becomes the duty of Ánanda Márgiis around the world to put pressure and insist that it be done. We Ánanda Má́rgiis are the disciples of Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji, and therefore we have that right.

At His lotus feet,

Ramesh Bhai Patel

Footnote 1. Hindi bhajana: “Bahároṋ phul barsáo, merá bhagaván áyá hae.” = “Oh Spring Season! Shower flowers, my God has come.” When songs are sung prior to the beginning of a discourse, these should be included in the printed discourse. This way sádhakas who have not had the opportunity to attend these programs of Bábá get the chance to learn about what sort of environment was created.

Footnote 2. In 1966 when this DMC was held, the AMPS organization was very poor. There was only microphone, a unidirectional mic which was connected to a large reel-to-reel recorder located far from Bábá's dais. This reel-to-reel machine was connected internally to the unidirectional microphone, and resulted in very good sound quality. But as the mic was unidirectional (naturally at a large function with many people and many types of extraneous sounds, unidirectional mics rather than omnidirectional mics were used), sound was only captured from what was directly in front of it. So on this day there was a bhajana that went on for the first six and a half minutes of the program. The single mic was posted in front of the singers. And when the bhajana finished, the mic had to be transferred over to the location of the dais, where Bábá was seated. In order to move the mic it had to be turned off, otherwise it would create a terrible noise over the PA system. So in the process of turning off the mic there was a kat-kat-kat sound. And then for the brief period it was off, the real-to-reel recorder was continuing to record. In that interim, when the mic was being moved to a position in front of Baba, at that moment Bábá started His discourse. As soon as the mic arrived in front of Him and was turned on, the sound became crystal clear. But for the initial three seconds there was that lapse during transfer of the mic and turning it on, due to which the first six words of the discourse ("The subject of today's discourse is") are not heard on the recording. The remainder of the recording is crystal clear-- far clearer in fact than the technology used in later years, when a small cassette recorder was used and recording was done via its own external mic rather than being linked into the mic used for the PA amplification system.

Moderators Note 1.

Moderators Note 3: This Ánanda Má́rga Discourses Network does not have any agenda against any group. Its only goal is to repair and protect Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's holy discourses so they will remain for the present and future humanity.

Moderators Note 4: If we remain passive onlookers and do not fix the negative trends of introducing distortion into Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's discourses and do not bring the printed discourses up to the proper standard now, it will become impossible to change this in the future. And that will be very bad.

The Supreme Cognition DMC Discourse: AMPS Book Missing First Paragraph

The Supreme Cognition, an important DMC discourse given in Surat, Gujarat (India) on 26 September 1966, is missing almost the entire first paragraph in the printed version Subháśita Saḿgraha Part 24. The first paragraph contains nine sentences of which the first eight are missing from the printed book.

In DMC discourses Bábá gives the name of the discourse in His first sentence. As that sentence is left out by the Tiljala group Publishers, they made up their own name for the discourse--without informing Ánanda Márgiis they had done so.

Below are two scans of the first page of the discourse. On the left is the scan of the untouched page as printed. On the right is the same page, with a red rectangle highlighting where the first eight sentences of the discourse should have been printed.

Distortion in Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12: Part-B Misinterpretation of “Speaker of Truth” as “Virtuous”

Distortion in Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12: Part-B

Misinterpretation of “Speaker of Truth” as “Virtuous”

Namaskár brothers and sisters,

On 8th June of the year 1979, Bábá delivered a Hindi discourse in Mumbai .

This article is the second of a series in which each of the deviations will be analyzed and presented to Ánanda Márgiis across the globe. Some of the deviations are of extremely serious nature and completely mar the essence of Bábá’s teachings.

Bábá Originally Said Satyavádii (Speaker of Truth): Publishers Interpreted As “Virtuous”

In His original spoken discourse Bábá used the word satyavádii, which means “one who speaks truth.” AMPS publishers have incorrectly interpreted this Hindi word, translating it as “virtuous.”

Usage in the Context of the Discourse

In this discourse, Bábá is explaining that to know the real cause behind anything one has to get to the original cause. Otherwise in the phenomenal world we see so many apparent causes, but behind them there is something deeper. Along this very line, the ultimate teaching of the discourse is that to realize Parama Puruśa one has to move behind all the apparent causes to that true controlling nucleus, the Noumenal Entity—the ultimate cause behind all causes.

And to illustrate this, Bábá gives the example of pápa or sin: there are so many sorts of sin in the world—but behind them there is one ultimate sin which is the fundamental cause of all the others. (3) And that fundamental sin is mithyácára, or falseness in conduct. In this very setting Bábá then gives the example of thievery: if a thief gives up telling lies, he will have to give up stealing altogether. Because, falsehood is the root cause of stealing.

The relevant portion of Bábá’s As-Is Hindi discourse is provided here for reference. This is the exact transcription from the recording of Bábá's discourse—

[Green means text transcribed directly “As Is” from the sound recording, as well its direct translation into English.]

For those who cannot read Hindi, the meaning of the above sentences in English is as follows. Here I have translated in a very careful, literal way so readers will understand the exact meaning of what Bábá has stated :

If a thief shuns speaking falsehood then he has to leave stealing too. Because after stealing, when other people nab the thief, if he is a speaker of truth (satyavádii) then he will say – ‘yes I stole’; so then he will have to quit stealing. For this reason it is said that there are two “qualities” thieves should not possess—first, he should not speak the truth, because if he speaks the truth he will have to give up stealing. And there is another defect that a thief should not possess. What is that? He should not have a cough.”

[Má́rgii laughter]

In the above passage, Bábá is explaining that the root cause behind the sin of stealing, is that of not speaking the truth. If one speaks the truth, one will have to give up stealing. So here the operative term is that of speaking the truth, versus speaking lies. If one speaks the truth, one cannot be a thief; in order to be a successful thief one has to be a successful liar first.

How Tiljala Publishers Distorted the Passage

Violet color means text published by Tiljala group.
Red color means distortion in text published by Tiljala group.

Now let us see how the Tiljala AMPS Publishers interpreted the above passage. Here is how they translated and printed it in Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12:

If a thief shuns falsehood, the base of all vices, he will also have to give up stealing, because people will catch him. If he is virtuous, then he will admit his guilt and will have to give up stealing.”

Usage of the word virtuous is destroying the true meaning of what Bábá is telling. This distortion is confusing as well as misleading. The word Bábá uses is satyavádii i.e. speaker of truth; but the Tiljala Publishers wrongly translated it as virtuous. The Tiljala Publishers have equated being virtuous with shunning falsehood. They are not the same thing—to equate them distorts Bábá's fundamental teaching here.

Satyavádii And VirtuousAre Not Interchangeable

Satyavádii means “speaker of truth”. Bábá is explaining in this discourse that the root cause of all sin is mithyácára i.e. falsehood. The critical cause of all worldly pápa is thinking and speaking falsehood. Those who are satyavádii i.e. speakers of truth, cannot engage in the other various types of worldly sin because speaking lies is the root cause of all worldly sin.

Whereas the Tiljala Publishers have translated satyavádii as “virtuous. Ánanda Má́rgiis know from Bábá's teachings that there are various positive qualities, and they are not all the same i.e. cannot be simply interchanged as synonyms. Virtue or puńya means paropakára i.e. helping others, acting for the welfare of others. Someone may be feeding food to the homeless, and that is puńya i.e. a virtuous act. But it is not to be equated with speaking the truth. To confuse these two separate ideas and muddle them together distorts Bábá's central teaching in this discourse.

Bábá has explained that mithyácára i.e. falsehood or lack of speaking the truth, is the root cause of worldly sin such as thievery. Bábá has not mentioned virtue in this context, which is a different concept. To introduce this term “virtuousout of the blue as a translation of satyavádii i.e. speaking the truth, distorts the discourse and misguides readers.

Another Perspective on The Serious Error In Translating Satyavádii As Virtuous

Bábá is taking an example of a thief who is also speaking truth (let us say he is compelled to speak truth -- not because of some ádarsha). For the sake of argument this may happen at least once. When the thief is nabbed then he has to admit to his crime as he is compelled to speak truth due to him being satyavádii. On the other hand the “virtuousby definition cannot steal even once -- even for the sake of argument. And that is
precisely why Bábá has not used such an example.

Conclusion

In this article, a distortion in Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12 published by AMPS is brought to the notice of general Márgiis. In the distorted text, “virtuousis used in place of the word satyavádii, speaker of truth. Bábá is logically and in humorous style giving the teaching that if a thief shuns falsehood he will become a speaker of truth. A speaker of truth will not be able to defend himself after stealing. Thus, by shunning falsehood a thief has to shun stealing too. And so indeed by this we understand that falsehood is a root cause of stealing. But the Tiljala AMPS publishers have distorted the text to say that “if a thief is virtuous then he will admit his guilt.” Lack of virtue has not been given by Bábá as the root cause of stealing; speaking falsehood has. To confuse the two represents serious distortion of the discourse of Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji.

The example given by Bábá is simple to understand and humorously presented. By distorting the phrase “speaker of truth” and changing it to “virtuous”, the Tiljala Publishers have marred the meaning.

Sincerely,
Bhakti

3. Bábá explains that pápa does not have anything to do with not following the do's and don'ts of a particular religion or religious text. Rather, pápa means doing actions which harm others. Baba says, “What is pápa? Paropakárah puńyáya pápáya parapiid́ańam. Any action that leads to one’s physical, psychic and spiritual well-being is called punya or a virtuous deed; and any action which leads to one’s physical, psychic and spiritual degeneration is called pápa or sin.” Ananda Marga Ideology and Way of Life in a Nutshell Part 10 . “Vaedhii Bhakti and Shuddhá Bhakti .”

1.
काट छाँट किया गया है;

2.
मिलावट्‌ किया गया है;

3.
बाबा के वाक्यों को काटकर अन्य वाक्य लिख दिए गए हैं;

4.

As Is” Discourses of Bábá

Namaskára Respected Márgii Brothers and Sisters,

Plan: How We Márgiis Should Get “As Is” Discourses

"Ánanda Márga Discourses" is a network, dedicated to the goal that our Ánanda Márga Publications Department should publish unaltered, pure, "As Is" discourses as delivered by Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji, propounder of Ánanda Márga ideology.

There are many, many places where what is printed in our books is not what Bábá spoke. We invite Ánanda Márgiis to listen to the audio recordings of Bábá's discourses, compare them to the printed versions of these discourses in our Ánanda Márga books, and email us your findings. Examples of the distortions in the printed discourses which Márgiis send us are posted to this Network so that all Ánanda Márgiis come to know what is the serious and unappreciable condition of our printed Ánanda Márga shástra.

With the raising of awareness among Ánanda Márgiis about the deplorable condition of our printed discourses, our hope is that more and more Ánanda Márgiis will help by calling out to the Publications Department, putting pressure on our brothers there, and demanding that our shástra be rectified.
1955 – 1990: Ánanda Márgiis Listened

To Guru's Discourses Directly

After 1990: Ánanda Márgiis Should Be Able To Read

Those Very Same Words

In Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's physical presence, devotees used to sit before Him and listen to His divine teachings from Him directly. Devotees of today should get the full experience of what Bábá spoke on those occasions, as is.

Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's Discourses:

Not Being Printed “As Is”

Yet it is unfortunate that hundreds of Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's printed discourses today are (a) edited, (b) modified, (c) re-written, or (d) missing the content of the second and third languages when Bábá spoke in more than one language. (Re-written means that Bábá spoke in one language, say English, and the discourse was translated by Ánanda Márga Publications into another language, say Bengali, and then re-translated from that into English. The re-translated version was then published as though it were the original English discourse.)

Today's Má́rgiis Do Not Have Access

To Read Bábá's True Words

So, our AM books are not a direct printing of the very words Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji used. Because of that, by reading a printed AM discourse today one is not receiving the actual words which Bábá spoke. Earlier devotees had the privilege of hearing Bábá's discourses directly from Him; devotees of today and the future should have the opportunity to read and enjoy Bábá's discourses "as is". And this is our goal, that our AMPS Publications Department should provide in printed form what Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji has spoken "as is"—which today is available in only a small handful out of the large number of Bábá's published discourses.

Lord Shiva's & Lord Krśńa's Teachings

Became Distorted Into Dogma

Bábá's Teachings on Same Path

History has witnessed that Lord Shiva's and Lord Krśńa's teachings got so adulterated that they lost almost all of their original essence and spirit. Now what remains of their "teachings" is mostly just dogma. It is tragic that at present, Ánanda Márga discourses are in that very path of distortion. Some skeptics may not have believed this before this Network was started; but if they review the distortions to Bábá's discourses which have been discussed thus far, and continue to review this Network's future reports, then there will be no doubt in their mind.

Nasty Characteristic of Religion:

Once Dogma Gets Established It Cannot Be Removed

If we do not do anything to rectify the current situation, then the true "As Is" discourses of Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji will never be seen by the world. Just as the teachings of Lord Shiva and Krśńa became transformed into dogma with time, the discourses of Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji are in the same road. If we do not stop the process, Bábá's teachings will be destroyed. Because religion has a very very nasty characteristic: whatever the followers get used to, they do not like to give up—regardless of whether it is rational or irrational. False, dogmatic ideas also followers do not like to give up. Those in India who believe that Lord Shiva was smoking hashish and that one of His sons named Gańesha had an elephant face, cannot today be convinced otherwise. And if you try to convince them, you will only receive attacks and abuse in return. So this is the nature of religion.

If We Remain Passive Onlookers, We Will Lose

Bábá's Original Discourses Forever

So, if we remain passive onlookers and do not fix the negative trends of introducing distortion into Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's discourses and do not bring the printed discourses up to the proper standard now, it will become impossible to change this in the future. And that will be very bad.

So to remain a passive onlooker is not the solution. We need your active participation.

Ánanda Márga Discourses Network

Needs Your Support

Our goal is to publish discourse distortions frequently and on an on-going basis. We welcome your suggestions and support. Indeed, we need the help of all Márgiis who have Bábá's audio cassettes, or any sort of help one can provide.

Indeed for this great task, we need everyone's support. Good people will naturally support this work; we request those whose nature is to place obstacles in the path of good deeds, to also support this lofty task.

Ánanda Márgiis: Raise the Cry to Publications Dept

Our Ánanda Marga Shástra Must Be Fixed, Must Be “As Is”

With the raising of awareness among Ánanda Márgiis about the deplorable condition of our printed discourses, our hope is that more and more Ánanda Márgiis will help by calling out to the Publications Department, putting pressure on our brothers there, and demanding that our shástra be rectified. In view of how critical it is that our AMPS Publications Department begin providing accurate, "As Is" Ánanda Márga Discourses, we further request that recipients of the postings of the Ánanda Márga Discourses Network please forward them to other Márgiis as well.

Respectfully,

Nityaniraiṋjana

From the Moderators:

The above letter documenting the urgent need to fix the printed discourses of Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji and bring them into proper condition, was sent via this network two weeks ago. It has been translated into Hindi, and two versions of that translation are included above for the convenience of Hindi-speaking readers.

All are requested to kindly select the language and version of your choice, print and circulate it among all Márgiis you know.
