Wrong and Dogmatic Photo on AM Book Cover

Namaskar,

The Ananda Marga "Namah Shiváya Shántáya" (NSS) book is one of the foundational texts of our ideology. It is given by Baba as part of our "dharma shastra"-- which consists of Subhasita Samgraha, Ananda Vacanamrtam, Namami Krsna Sundarama, and Namah Shiváya Shántáya. So NSS has tremendous importance.

In view of this it is shocking and unfortunate that the cover of the printed book NSS has for many years been an ideological blunder.


Dogmatic Hindu Depiction of Lord Shiva Is Used

The cover of a book is a representation of what it contains: A cookbook will depict food on the cover; a book on ecology will have nature scenes on the cover. In this way, our book on Lord Shiva contains a picture of Lord Shiva. But it is so unfortunate that a dogmatic Hindu depiction of Lord Shiva was used, due to which Shivaji is pictured in a wrong posture which Baba forbids.

Baba says, "Padmásana is the posture of sitting with the right ankle over the lift thigh and the left ankle over the right thigh, the tongue pushing the teeth out. In padmásana alone, the vision can be fixed on trikuti – the middle point between the eyebrows. Just as the lotus blossoms forth in water, so also in this posture the mind tends to evolve. That is why this posture is termed padmásana (padma – lotus, ásana – posture). This is the best ásana for meditation. Persons with shorter legs experience difficulty in padmásana. Sádhaná is directing the mind towards expansion and padmásana does help the same." (Táttvika Diipiká Ánanda Púrńimá 1957)



Legs Are Portrayed in the Opposite Arrangement

See the below picture, and you will note that the legs are portrayed in the opposite arrangement from what Baba directs. All Ananda Margis sit in Padmasana using the arrangement Baba has taught. Lord Shiva is Taraka Brahma and the representation of dharma itself. Why should we publish a book which portrays Lord Shiva in a dogmatic Hindu posture? The book cover is a representation of what the book contains: If the cover is dogmatic, then readers can expect that the contents will also be dogmatic. So it goes completely against Ananda Marga ideology to print such a nasty dogmatic photo which makes it appear as though the book contents are also dogmatic.

This above is the scan copy of the Ananda Marga NSS book cover from our Tiljala Publications.

Please pay attention to the arrangement of Lord Shiva's legs, which is wrong. That is the topic of this posting: In the photo, the legs are displayed in an incorrect way.



Just The Opposite of How Baba Instructs Padmásana


Baba says that in Padmásana the right ankle should be lifted first so it goes over the lift thigh, and then the left ankle is lifted to cross over the right leg and right thigh. But look carefully at the above picture, and see how Lord Shiva is sitting. First the left ankle is lifted onto the right thigh, and then the right ankle is lifted to cross over the left leg and left thigh. That is just the opposite of how Baba instructs Padmásana is to be done! So this is a great ideological blunder. Padmásana is an integral part of our Ananda Marga sádhaná, and Lord Shiva would never go against this timeless guideline. But in the dogmatic Hindu tradition that is how He is usually pictured. And our Tiljala Publications adopted just such a dogmatic depiction for the cover of NSS book. This is completely unacceptable.



Showing Lord Shiva in an Adharmic Posture

The NSS English version (1995) was the first to be printed with this dogmatic photo. When it came out, Márgiis protested and opposed the dogmatic depiction of Lord Shiva. But the Tiljala Publishers ignored Márgiis' concerns, and went on to print the NSS Hindi (1996) and NSS Bengali (2000) with the same dogmatic depiction of Lord Shiva, showing Him in an adharmic posture.

So this is one very serious matter, that when an adhármic distortion of Lord Shiva's image is printed on our AM NSS book cover and it is brought to the attention of our Tiljala Publishers, even then they do not care enough to rectify the matter. Even if they could not reprint the English edition but the matter was brought up prior to the Hindi and Bengali editions. So the book cover could easily have been corrected for those editions. Our Tiljala Publications' failure to make this correction is indicative of a non-caring and brazen attitude which is wholly inappropriate for publishers of our dharma shastra.

1. The discourse "Revolt Against Dogma" was given by Baba in Kolkata in 1981. It is published in Ánanda Vacanámrtam part 34.

2. Now first see what Baba actually said on that occasion:

“For [the] devotional approach, nothing external is required; nothing external is required to be done. And the supreme apex of this true spirit of devotionalism is Ánanda Márga. And because it is the supreme pinnacle of devotional approach, you should remember that victory is yours, because Parama Purus'a is cent per cent yours.”

Again please see, and pay special attention to the red section, which has been removed by our Tiljala Publishers:

"For the devotional approach, nothing external is required; nothing external is required to be done. And the supreme apex of this true spirit of devotionalism is Ánanda Márga. And because it is the supreme pinnacle of devotional approach, you should remember that victory is yours, because Parama Purus'a is cent per cent yours."

3. Now see here how our Tiljala Publishers printed this section in Ánanda Vacanámrtam part 34 of Baba’s books:

4. So see the above para, how our Tiljala Publishers removed Baba’s original words, that is, the following portion which is highlighted in red: And the supreme apex of this true spirit of devotionalism is Ánanda Márga.



Why Sentence Removed


Why was this sentence removed by our Tiljala Publishers? The reason is quite obvious. They are ashamed and embarrassed to publicly highlight Ánanda Márga philosophy as being the height of spirituality. They are too concerned about what others will think. So they deleted that section.

The unfortunate fact here is that our Tiljala Publishers felt it was an outrageous statement that Ánanda Márga philosophy is the culmination of spirituality, so they left out the sentence altogether. In the same way, some cowards do not like to hear people say that Shrii Shrii Ánandamurti jii is Parama Purus'a.

And in the same way our Tiljala Publishers think, "What will non-Márgiis say when they read these things like-- And the supreme apex of this true spirit of devotionalism is Ánanda Márga."  So, they leave out such points wherever found in the discourses. The present case is one such example.



THEIR READY-MADE EXCUSE


There is one other very important thing you must know about this entire situation. Our Tiljala Publishers have incorporated one ready-made excuse into their plan. If anyone raises this matter with them and asks why certain key words are missing, then our Tiljala Publishers will say, “It was inaudible on the original cassette.” This is what our Tiljala Publishers repeat.

Here then is the “As Is” version of that section of Guru’s discourse again--

“For [the] devotional approach, nothing external is required; nothing external is required to be done. And the supreme apex of this true spirit of devotionalism is Ánanda Márga. And because it is the supreme pinnacle of devotional approach, you should remember that victory is yours, because Parama Purus'a is cent per cent yours.”

Again please see the above para, and pay special attention to the red section, which has been removed by our Tiljala Publishers



Ánanda Márga Scripture Not Being Protected

Therefore Responsibility Falls to Ánanda Má́rgiis


Bábá says, “The scriptures containing spiritual injunctions must be totally flawless.” (Namah Shiváya Shántáya, Disc: 14) So as Ánanda Márgiis, we must take this very seriously and work together to make the printed version of Bábá's discourses perfect. By such examples as the above, it becomes clear we cannot merely sit back and expect that with time the Tiljala Publishers will fix everything.

Thirty three years have passed since 1981, with no sign of fixing the discourses going on. The Tiljala group whatever they spend all their time and resources on these days, if instead they had utilized these in fixing Bábá's discourses, then their efforts would have been worthwhile. When our Publishers are not fixing the discourses, then it falls upon Ánanda Má́rgiis to come forward, create pressure for change, and help in the rectification of our scripture.

(a) The discourse Rudra Gotra was originally given by Bábá in Hindi in Ranchi on 26 May 1969. The English translation of this discourse was published  by Tiljala Publications in their Electronic Edition 7.5 (EE7.5) in 2009.

(b) Now, for all concerned Ánanda Márgiis, we compare the English version printed by Tiljala Publications in EE7.5 with the "As-Is" Hindi transcription of Bábá's original sound file of this Hindi discourse.

(c) The below scanned text in English is how Tiljala Publications published the final section (1) of the discourse in the EE7.5. That is followed by scans of the "As-Is" Hindi version. Anyone can easily see that the "As-Is" Hindi version ​is over four times as long the printed English version. It is evident that those in Tiljala Publications did not do a proper comprehensive translation of the original Hindi as given by Bábá.

Indeed, Bábá spoke 1442 Hindi words in this final section of the discourse. Every one of those words you will find in the As-Is transcription. Whereas Tiljala Publications' English printing of the same section of the discourse contains only 325 words.

Thus, it is immediately apparent that there is a large difference in the amount of text in the original Hindi "As-Is" transcription, and the EE7.5 publication. The "As-Is" version presents every single word Bábá spoke. In stark contrast, in their English version, Tiljala Publications printed a mere summary of what Bábá spoke. Much has been left out, and what small amount they included is a paraphrased summary. Indeed, what Tiljala published is not a translation of Guru's words, but a scant summary.

One great devotee recently sent a copy of the original Hindi sound file of the final section of this discourse.(1) The As-Is Hindi transcription was made from this sound file.The sound file can be downloaded below. (2)

So the above is the 325 word summary published by Tiljala Publications. What they have done is a complete injustice to Guru's original discourse. Because see here below all that Bábá spoke. Whether you know Hindi or not, with your own eyes, you can easily see that Bábá's below original Hindi section is much longer and more involved than the petty summary that Tiljala printed above. See here all that Bábá spoke that day in His holy discourse, "Rudra Gotra."


As-Is Transcription of Final Section of Original Hindi Sound File

Following is the "As-Is" transcription of the original Hindi sound file of the equivalent final section of the discourse "Rudra Gotra":





Note: Bábá’s discourses were delivered orally. Speech patterns are different from the written word. Naturally then, when making the written version, certain words are not needed. Those words have been marked by curly brackets { }. That means every word Bábá spoke has been included in this Hindi transcription, but when reading pay attention to these bracketed {} sections.

Those bracketed sections have been kept intact as an official record. That way - when comparing with the original sound file - the "As-Is" version stands as a complete record of every word and syllable spoken by Guru.

Also note that square brackets [  ] in the text are used to indicate insertions by the editors. Anything spoken by Márgiis during the discourse, is also placed in square brackets. Such as ["बाबा, बाबा, बाबा !"].


Next Four Pages of Final Section of Original Hindi Sound File - As-Is Transcription

Here are the next four pages of the "As-Is" transcription of this final section of the discourse "Rudra Gotra":








So the above six pages are the "As-Is" transcription of that final section of Guru's discourse, "Rudra Gotra." (1) These pages correspond exactly to every word spoken by Bábá on the sound file, which is downloadable at the below link. (2)

In comparing the "As-Is" transcription with the text of Tiljala's published version in the Electronic Edition 7.5, all will easily see that the Tiljala Publishers have not presented Guru's complete discourse. Tiljala Publications has moreover reprinted this severely contracted English summary in the book Bábá's Grace, and they continue to make it available for purchase.

Anyone can see with their own eyes - regardless of their language background - that Bábá's original spoken discourse is much, much longer than the abbreviated English version put in print by Tiljala Publications. This is not a matter of translation. This is an issue of distortion. Guru's words are being categorically dismissed and removed by those in Tiljala Publications. In result, the English edition is an altered, bogus representation of what Guru actually spoke. Not only that, the integrity of the discourse itself is now threatened and put in jeopardy for the future generations. It is a very sad and painful state of affairs.

It is unfortunate that Tiljala Publications have distorted our Ánanda Márga scripture in the following ways:

(1) Failure to present all Guru has said;

(2) Failure to transcribe in "As-Is" fashion;

(3) Changing and rewriting Guru's words as a mere summary of what He actually spoke.

When our Publishers are wasting their time and money in self-serving pursuits such as group fighting, then it falls upon Ánanda Má́rgiis to come forward, create pressure for change, and help in the rectification of our scripture.


Must Not Delay Repair of Scripture

Such distortion and extreme summarizing as seen in the above Rudra Gotra publication is of vital importance and must be repaired without delay. The very survival of Ánanda Márga ideology as guiding light for the suffering humanity depends on this.

Bábá says, "When the sole purpose of scripture, i.e. dharmashástra is to establish the human beings in the stable, exalted position of spiritual ideation, it must be practical, rational, infallible and universal. It must be based on deep eternal truths. It must be ápta vákya. A scripture is a guided entity." (Tattva Kaomudii - 2)

NOTES ABOUT H GROUP— It is regrettable that H and EC groups have no interest in Bábá’s discourses, otherwise they would have become active in publishing them from the original sound track instead of merely reprinting the books which the Tiljala group publishes. The distortions introduced by Tiljala group in their publications of Bábá’s discourses are errors of commissional in nature. But let none make the mistake of thinking that H and EC groups are innocent here; by their failure to take interest in publishing Bábá’s original discourses, they demonstrate a lethargy toward Bábá’s shástra which is highly condemnable. H and EC groups’ failure to publish Bábá’s original discourses is a failure of omission. The omissional error of H and EC is every bit as serious as the commissional errors of Tiljala group. And moreover, H group's publishing department merely reprints the distortion-laden, error-filled books made by Tiljala group, and puts their stamp on it. So they are supporting and participating in the sins of Tiljala group.




Fix Bábá's Discourses Now or Never

If we remain passive onlookers and do not fix the negative trends of introducing distortion into Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's discourses and do not bring the printed discourses up to the proper standard now, it will become impossible to change this in the future. And even if in future some sincere Ánanda Márgiis will try, they will be treated as enemies. Because this is the way religion works. Today one cannot teach the devotees of Lord Krśńa that He has nothing to do with cows; they will never believe it. In the same way, Ánanda Márgiis will become used to the wrong teachings in our AM books and they will not like to give them up. They will think that whatever was there at the end of the twentieth century, that was the gold standard for all time. And it should be kept and maintained. So we don't have any time: it is either now or never. The clock is ticking: If we do not get Bábá's discourses fixed now, it will be impossible to do so later. And that will cause bloodshed and more division on the basis of the various versions of Bábá's teachings and their explanations. History bears testimony to this, that all the religions have similarly broken into multiple factions, groups and subgroups on the basis of differences in scripture interpretations. Bábá wanted to eliminate such problems, and that is why Bábá's discourses are recorded. But unfortunately, those recordings are not being published properly. This matter is very serious.

Thank you for your interest in this important topic that deals with the purity of Bábá's printed books.

This letter addresses another discourse in which the published text bears no resemblance to the words Bábá actually spoke. The discourse is from the Hindi Ánanda Vacanámrtam, AV Part 13, chapter 7. (1)

The letter contains the following points:

1. Please download the sound file so you can better understand this issue. (see link below, note 2)

2. The discourse under question and scrutiny is: AV13 "योगी अवश्य ही आस्तिक होंगे" ["A Yogii Must Certainly Be A Theist"].

3. This is a discourse given by Bábá in Hindi, and yet the Hindi discourse published by Tiljala Publishers does not match up with Bábá’s original Hindi which Bábá Himself spoke. It has obviously been completely rewritten by the Tiljala Publishers (TP).

4. As a result, instead of reading Bábá’s original words in direct transcription, Márgiis are forced to read a discourse which has been worded entirely by the TP. For purposes of bangalization they have re-written the discourse instead of printing what Bábá spoke.

5. Here below is what TP published in AV13, claiming it to be Bábá's discourse "A Yogii Must Certainly Be A Theist". Those who know Hindi will immediately note that there is not a single sentence below which resembles what Bábá actually spoke on the audio file. You can download the sound file to compare what Bábá actually spoke, with what the Tiljala Publishers printed. (see note 2)

Here below is Tiljala Publication's version of the discourse "A Yogii Must Certainly Be A Theist" [योगी अवश्य ही आस्तिक होंगे], published in AV13: 





By comparing the above Tiljala Publisher's printed text with the audio file of what Bábá spoke, it is immediately apparent that the two bear no resemblance one to the other.

6. TP printed on the inside cover of the book AV13, "श्रीमती उर्मिला बनर्जी द्वारा बंला से अनूदित" -- "Translated from the Bengali by Shrimatii Urmila Banarjee". So Tiljala Publishers claim that Bábá has given the discourse in Bengali, and this is the Hindi translation. Which of course is completely false.



 Responsibility Falls to Ánanda Má́rgiis

Bábá says, “The scriptures containing spiritual injunctions must be totally flawless.” (Namah Shiváya Shántáya, Disc: 14) So as Ánanda Márgiis, we must take this very seriously and work together to make the printed version of Bábá's discourses perfect. By such examples as the above, it becomes clear we cannot merely sit back and expect that with time the Tiljala Publishers will fix everything. First, with distortions such as those illustrated above, there is every proof of intentionality. When something has been intentionally distorted, then one cannot expect those who brought about the distortion to turn around and rectify it. And second, twenty-three years have passed since 1990, with no sign of fixing the discourses going on. The Tiljala group whatever they spend all their time and resources on these days, if instead they had utilized these in fixing Bábá's discourses, then their efforts would have been worthwhile. When our Publishers are wasting their time and money in self-serving pursuits such as group fighting, then it falls upon Ánanda Má́rgiis to come forward, create pressure for change, and help in the rectification of our scripture.

7. For your reference and confirmation, the sound file containing Bábá’s original discourse can be downloaded below. (2)  Just by listening to a few words, anyone knowing Hindi can understand that Bábá's words and Tiljala Publishers' words are completely different.

8. For those not knowing Hindi, you can contact any private business translating agency also and confirm with them that in this sound file, Bábá is speaking words which are completely different from what TP themselves wrote and printed.

Volunteers Needed

We make a special request for volunteers to help in this work of producing and reviewing the “As Is” discourses. Márgii volunteers are needed from all countries around the world, to help with translating the “As Is” discourses into the various languages, and also to help with translating postings about distortions so that all Márgiis around the world can be made aware. Comparing the “As Is” discourses to the discourses published by our AMPS is a big job, and help here is also needed. 3. All should know that Bábá originally delivered the discourse, AV13 "A Yogii Must Certainly Be A Theist," in Hindi on 30 June 1979, in Patna. But the publishers have declared that Bábá spoke in Bangla. So this is a Patna Hindi Discourse, Stolen & Covered Up As Bangla.

4. This discourse, "A Yogii Must Certainly Be A Theist", was given by Bábá in Hindi. TP translated this discourse from the original Hindi into Bengali, and then treated that translated Bengali version as the original. So TP then translated again from Bengali into Hindi—and published that twice-translated Hindi version in the Hindi book, Ánanda Vacanámrtam, part 13, chapter 7, claiming it to be Bábá's words. But Bábá's rule is that discourses are to be directly transcribed from the original language, i.e. in this case the Hindi discourse Bábá spoke should have been transcribed directly, and Bábá's Hindi words directly printed in the Hindi book—which they did not do. So they disobeyed Bábá.

5. The outcome is that instead of reading Bábá’s original words in direct transcription, Márgiis are forced to read a twice-translated version which, due to being translated twice (first from Hindi to Bengali and then Bengali to Hindi), is far from what Bábá actually spoke in Hindi. This occurred due to not following Bábá's rule of transcribing directly from the original Hindi.

6. The purpose of this letter is to make Bábá's printed discourses authentic and dogma-free. This is not a language issue this is an issue of authenticity. The duty of every disciple of Lord Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji is to keep watch on the purity of Guru's printed books.

7. Summary: The discourse "A Yogii Must Certainly Be A Theist" was given by Bábá in Hindi, in Patna. The Tiljala Publishers have printed that it was given in Bangla, in order to falsely make it appear that Bábá gave more discourses in Bengali than any other language. They translated the discourse twice: from Hindi to Bangla, and from Bangla into Hindi—thus straying from the Hindi words Bábá actually spoke.

On 18 August 1979 in Taipei, Baba has given a short and very pointed discourse on the teaching that dharma is for all human beings no matter where they live or what language they speak. (1) In that setting, He concluded with some poignant words which He has used in other discourses as well:

"So, you should always remember that dharma is for all. Though it is for those who know English, it is [also] for those who do not know English. It is for all, it is for common people just like pure water, pure air, and pure light."

Instead of writing what Baba said, the Tiljala Publishers have printed---

"So, you should always remember that dharma is for all. Though it is for those who know English, it is for those who do not know English. It is for all. It is for common people just like your worker, your dear and near ones."

This yellow phrase that dharma is for all, "just like pure water, pure air, and pure light" is a classic expression in Ananda Marga ideology. Baba has used this very phrase in two other discourses (3), and has utilized the idea in innumerable discourses. Indeed, it is part of the core of Ananda Marga teachings.

And so how unfortunate it is that our Tiljala Publishers could not recognize such a ubiquitous teaching when they heard it with their own ears on the taped recording. They have themselves printed in Ananda Vacanamrtam part 14 Publisher's Note that this discourse has been transcribed from tape. Hearing and accurately transcribing what Baba says requires regular practice and great interest. This raises the question as to why the Tiljala Publishers cannot manage accurate transcription of Baba's discourses.

And it is one thing that they could not hear accurately what Baba said; it is yet another matter that they could not recognize the inappropriateness of what they were writing and printing in Baba's name.

Regarding dharma, Baba closes this discourse by stating "It is for all, it is for common people just like pure water, pure air, and pure light."

Instead of writing what Baba said, Tiljala Publishers have printed---

"It is for all. It is for common people just like your worker, your dear and near ones."

Whereas Baba is comparing dharma to the universal elements "pure water, pure air, and pure light", the Tiljala Publishers have quoted Baba as instead likening dharma to "your worker, your dear and near ones."

It is obvious that "your worker, your dear and near ones" are not universal in the way that dharma is. Anyone having a grasp of Ananda Marga ideology would immediately recognize and be suspicious that what they thought they'd heard on the tape, must not be correct. Anyone having developed viveka in this situation would listen again and again to that portion of the tape, thinking of what other words Baba might have spoken besides "your worker, your dear and near ones." But our Tiljala Publishers did not have that viveka. They unwittingly accepted that Baba had compared the universality of dharma to "your worker, your dear and near ones." Having thus wrongly accepted this, they became completely misguided by their own lack of understanding of Ananda Marga teachings, and printed these words.

The unfortunate result is, this Tiljala Publisher's final sentence of the discourse, is a laughing stock. It is common knowledge in Ananda Marga that dharma is universal, "just like pure water, pure air, and pure light". No one can think that Shrii Shrii Anandamurtiji would close a discourse comparing dharma to "your worker, your dear and near ones."

Sadly, with such balking errors our wt dadas in Tiljala Publications expose themselves as incapable of transcribing Baba's discourses. Two things are needed for proper transcription from the sound files of Baba's discourses:

1. Repeated practice listening to Baba's audios;
2. Understanding of Ananda Marga Ideology.

If they had #1--practice listening to Baba's audios--they would have been able to hear what Baba was saying.
If they had #2--understanding of Ananda Marga Ideology--they would have immediately discarded what they wrote knowing it to be inconsistent with AM teachings, and searched further,

In view of the above points, no one possessing viveka could think that Baba is comparing dharma with "your worker, your dear and near ones."

Baba says that apta vakya does not undergo metamorphosis or distortion. So if it does get changed or distorted, then it is no longer apta vakya i.e. the word of Guru. It is up to Ananda Margiis to protect our scripture and keep it "As Is"-- the word of Guru.

Baba says,

"Now in this realm of spirituality, whatever we receive, we receive directly from Him, and not through any media, and that's why the secret of spirituality is known as “ápta vákya” and not “prápta vákya”. Prápta vákyas come through different media, through different physical media, and that is why they may vary, they may undergo metamorphosis. And, due to their going through metamorphosis, they may come within the scope of relativity; they may undergo distortion. That's why these prápta vákyas or prápta vastus are not final, and these prápta vastus or prápta vákyas can not be, must not be the desiderata of human beings. The only thing that we want, that an aspirant wants from Him is the ápta vákya and this ápta vákya is guru vákya, and this guru vákya is mantramúlaḿ." (Ápta Vákya and Prápta Vákya EGD 30 November 1978 Madras AV6-01)



Will Cause Bloodshed and More Division

History bears testimony to this, that all the religions have similarly broken into multiple factions, groups and subgroups on the basis of differences in scripture interpretations. Bábá wanted to eliminate such problems, and that is why Bábá's discourses are recorded. But unfortunately, those recordings are not being published properly. This matter is very serious.

If we remain passive onlookers and do not fix the negative trends of introducing distortion into Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's discourses and do not bring the printed discourses up to the proper standard now, it will become impossible to change this in the future. And even if in future some sincere Ánanda Márgiis will try, they will be treated as enemies. Because this is the way religion works.

Today one cannot teach the devotees of Lord Krśńa that He has nothing to do with cows; they will never believe it. In the same way, Ánanda Márgiis will become used to the wrong teachings in our AM books and they will not like to give them up. They will think that whatever was there at the end of the twentieth century, that was the gold standard for all time. And it should be kept and maintained. So we don't have any time: it is either now or never. The clock is ticking: If we do not get Bábá's discourses fixed now, it will be impossible to do so later. And that will cause bloodshed and more division on the basis of the various versions of Bábá's teachings and their explanations.

They used the tape, they listened to the tape-- and even then could not listen properly, and did not have the discrimination to understand that what they wrote is inconsistent with Ananda Marga teachings.



NB For those searching the Electronic Edition for the distortion described in the above posting, please note:

The final two pages of the discourse "The Three Species of Human Being" are not in EE7.5. You will need to refer to the actual printed book "Ananda Vacanamrtam (AV) Parts 13 & 14", which came out later.

The Electronic Edition EE7.5 was published in 2009, and does not contain the latest version of the discourse "The Three Species of Human Being". The latest version of this discourse is printed in the book "AV Parts 13 & 14", published by the Tiljala Publishers in 2011. In that book, the discourse goes from page 158 to page 164. The final two pages of the discourse are not contained in EE7.5. These final two pages are listed by the Tiljala Publishers as a "Short talk by the author after the discourse". This short talk was given by Baba during the same session when He gave "The Three Species of Human Being", and is considered as a part of that discourse as per the table of contents.
 
Look in the book "AV Parts 13 & 14" on page 164, and you will see the final sentence of the discourse as follows:

"So, you should always remember that dharma is for all. Though it is for those who know English, it is for those who do not know English. It is for all. It is for common people just like your worker, your dear and near ones."

Tiljala Steals Hindi Discourse & Falsely Declares It as Bangla

This letter addresses another stolen discourse. Specifically, it was stolen from its original language and covered up as Bangla. Why was this done? In order to make it appear that Bábá gave more discourses in Bengali than any other language. The discourse in question is from the latest English edition (2011) of Ánanda Vacanámrtam, AV Part 13, chapter 9.

The letter contains the following points:
1: Please download the sound file so you can better understand this issue (see note 1 below).
2: The discourse under scrutiny is: Ananda Vacanamrtam-13, "The Meaning of the Word Yoga."
3: This is a Hindi Discourse given in Patna, stolen & covered up as Bangla.
4: The Tiljala Publishers have printed that it was given in Bangla. They want to make it appear that Bábá gave more discourses in Bengali than any other language.
5. This is not a language issue but a matter of authenticity.

Labeled As Bangla Discourse

Following are the details of how the Publishers took an original Hindi discourse - "The Meaning of the Word Yoga" - from AV-13 and labeled it as a Bangla discourse. This very harmful, alarming, and deceptive trend is discussed at length below in an easy-to-read format.

1: All should know that Bábá originally delivered the discourse, AV-13 "The Meaning of the Word Yoga", in Hindi on 30 June 1979 Patna, in Patna. But the publishers have declared that Bábá spoke in Bangla. That is their deceptive tactic.

2: Be sure to play the sound and carefully review the published discourse.

3: For your reference and confirmation, the sound file containing Bábá’s original discourse has been posted to the blogsite (see note 1). Just by listening to a few words, anyone knowing Hindi can understand that Bábá is speaking Hindi – not Bengali.

4: You can contact any private translation business or translating agency and confirm with them that, in this sound file, Bábá is speaking Hindi and not Bengali.



False Things Written In Publisher's Note

5: But look what the publishers have written about this very discourse in their various Publisher’s Notes.

In 2011, they wrote the following Publisher's Note in the English printed edition of Ananda Vacanamrtam-13:

“The Meaning of the Word 'Yoga'?”. Discourse in Bengali. Tape. Originally published in Bengali as “Yoga Kii?” in Ánanda Vacanámrtam 13, 1980. Tr. from the original Bengali by Dr. Aditya Kumar Mohanty. (Ánanda Vacanámrtam (2011), part 13, Publisher’s Note, p.xxiii)

So in their above note there are two places where they claim this to be a Bengali discourse. Those have been demarcated by a red line (scan appended at bottom of this email).

Plus in the title page of the book itself, they are making the false claim in the copyright section that the entire book has been translated from the original Bengali. And that has been demarcated in red in the scan appended directly below.







Why Tiljala Steals:

Their Goal Is To Make Bangla The Religious Language of Ananda Marga

6. Some new margiis may be wondering why all this is going on - why would those Tiljala Publishers be so intrigued and enticed to steal discourses by claiming them as original Bengali. The reason is very clear. They want bragging rights that Bangla is the greatest and top-most language and that all should bow down to the mighty pedestal of the Bengali language.

In that sense they are no different than the Muslims. Those Muslims have mandated that that the Koran / Quaran must only be printed in Arabic. Thus all followers of Islam must learn Arabic to read their scripture.

Those at the helm of Tiljala Publications desire the same status for Bengali. If one day they are able to step-by-step steal all the discourses and falsely label them as coming from the original Bengali, then they can impose Bangla on all. Everyone will be forced in that direction. This is their long-term dream. They want Bengali to become the religious language of Ananda Marga. That is their aspiration, which they hope to manifest one day. In sum, such publishers are a spitting-image of those Islamic clerics.



Summary

The discourse "The Meaning of the Word 'Yoga" was given by Bábá in Hindi, in Patna. The Tiljala Publishers have printed that it was given in Bangla, in order to falsely make it appear that Bábá gave more discourses in Bengali than any other language. They translated the discourse twice: from Hindi to Bangla, and from Bangla into English—thus straying the English version far away from the Hindi original.

MAKING DISCOURSES IN JAMALPUR RAILWAY OFFICE AT LUNCHTIME

This Baba story is not just a story but also the reply to the propaganda recently released by B group PRS Dada.

In 1958, AMPS first gained access to audio recording devices and began using audio reels to record Baba’s discourses. Baba ordered that the original audio recorded version would stand as the mother copy and all translations were to be made from that original language.

But now PRS Dada is spreading the propaganda that all any and all discourses given by Baba should be translated via Bengali and all books should indicate Bengali as being the original language - not the Hindi nor the English audio file.

In the very early years of Ananda Marga when recording devices were not available, i.e. from from 1955 - 58, Baba’s system was that sadhakas noted down His discourses with pen and paper. Then Baba reviewed them in Bengali. So Bengali became the original language of those few select discourses.

That system stopped in 1958 when audio recording devices began being used in AMPS. Then the rule became that all discourses that were recorded on audio machines should be printed "As-Is." Since Baba's order, books like AV-34 (E) have been printed and published in the "As-Is" form.

But now the false propaganda has been given that all discourses should be marked as "from the original Bengali" - regardless of which language Baba originally delivered the discourse.

This letter deals with this highly significant issue.

Note: This is an old-issue that is once again surfacing due to one Dada's mistaken claims. Unfortunately he has a hard time learning about this topic.



PREVIEW:

WHAT HAPPENED THAT TIME

1. Baba delivered nearly all of the DMC discourses for Subhasita Samgraha parts 1 – 6 in Hindi.
2. That was before audio recording devices were available in Ananda Marga.
3. Various margiis noted down Baba’s discourses at DMC and presented them to Baba for publication.
4. Those who noted down the discourses for SS-2 to SS-6 were native Bangla speakers so they wrote their notes in Bengali.
5. Those note-takers missed much of what Baba actually spoke in Hindi.
6. So Baba worked with them in the ensuing days and weeks to make the discourses proper.
7. Because they were native Bangla speakers Baba worked with them in Bengali to finalise those discourses.
8. Baba’s review in Bengali was exhaustive and numerous sections were added.
9. So Baba included an Author’s Note in SS-2 indicating that although the discourses were originally given at DMC in Hindi, one should treat the printed Bengali version as the original. Because an audio recording was not made of the original Hindi DMC discourse and Baba made many updates to their notes in Bengali.

Note: Most are aware that this issue has been fought over for 24 years. Those with deeper interest should please write us – and we will provide you with all the relevant documents.

Note: This is not a language issue; rather, maintaining the authenticity of Baba’s discourses is what is at stake.

Back in the early days, before there was the ability and technology in Ananda Marga to audio record discourses, Baba delivered DMC pravacans that became part of the Subhasita Samgraha series of publications – specifically part 1 to part 6.



HOW SS 2-6 WERE WRITTEN BEFORE 1958

In particular, those discourses of Subhasita Samgraha parts 2 – 6 were originally given by Baba in Hindi at the DMC venue. Those discourses were not recorded on audio because reels and cassettes were still not available those days in Ananda Marga. So some people were assigned to note down the discourses with pen and paper. Since those note-takers could not properly write down all that Baba spoke, it was needed to check over the accuracy and completeness of their notes. Ultimately, Baba had to expound greatly on the topic as the Bengali notes of Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji were just bits and pieces of what Baba had actually spoken.

Now here comes more about the discourses in SS parts 2 – 6.



SS-2 MADE DURING LUNCHTIME AT THE JAMALPUR RAILWAY OFFICE

Here is the story how both Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji could only note down bits and pieces of what Baba had actually spoken at the time of DMC. They were native Bangla speakers who would regularly take dictation from Baba in the Jamalpur railway office during lunchtime. He would sit under the tree when the weather was good - and when the weather was not accomodating then He would give dictation at His desk in the railway office.

And sometimes Baba would sit under the tree at night with an oil lamp and give them dictation.

In the case of those DMC discourses that eventually became Subhasita Samgraha parts 2 – 6, Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji noted down those discourses when they were originally given by Baba in Hindi at DMC. But Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji were unable to capture all of what Baba spoke - they only noted down bits and pieces. And those notes were in Bengali, even though Baba primarily delivered those discourses in Hindi.

So to prepare the discourse for publication, Baba would orally update their notes in Bengali and they would write down Baba's updates in Bengali. This was done for the ease, facility, and efficiency of those native Bangla speakers who were taking down Baba’s dictation. Specifically, Baba was involved in updating and correcting their notes that would eventually comprise the published discourses of Subhasita Samgraha parts 2 - 6. And, as stated, most of this was done during lunchtime at the Jamalpur Railway Office or in the evenings.

The key point here is that both Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji were native Bangla speakers. And Baba had to expound greatly on the topic as the Bengali notes of Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji were just bits and pieces of what Baba had actually spoken in Hindi at the time of DMC.

So for their ease and accuracy, Baba worked with them in updating their notes in Bangla.

This entire process occurred because at that time Ananda Marga did not have the capability of audio recording Baba DMC discourses. That technology was brought into our Ananda Marga later on.


 
WHY SS-2  DISCOURSES BECAME VERY LENGTHY

Thus for parts 2 – 6 of the Subhasita Samgraha series, Baba graciously offered more illustration and explanation. Over the course of many sessions, Baba worked with Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji to ensure the topic was clearly presented. In that way, those discourses grew in size.

Indeed in parts Subhasita Samgraha parts 2 – 6, the chapters (i.e. discourses) became very lengthy. Some were even 35 pages or or more in length. That is why in those books there are only 4 – 5 discourses per book. Because Baba elaborated greatly while editing the notes of Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji, and all that work was done in Bengali because those two brothers were native Bangla speakers. Although Baba delivered those discourses in Hindi at DMC, those brothers could not fully write down everything during the time of DMC itself. Thus Baba worked with them later on in Bengali to prepare those discourses for publication.

Because of the sheer length of the discourses, SS parts 2 – 6 contain only 4 or 5 chapters, i.e. discourses. To be exact, SS-2 has five discourses, SS 3-5 have four discourses, and SS-6 has five discourses.

The reason why there are less discourses in SS parts 2 – 6 is because Baba clarified and elaborated upon their notes. What Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji noted down at DMC was just bits and pieces of what Baba spoke. And those notes were enlarged upon when Baba was finalising the discourse. And all that work was done in Bengali.

Hence, at the end of that process, they were no longer Hindi discourses since Baba had expounded on the topic in Bengali. That is why for parts 2 – 6 of the Subhasita Samgraha series, Bengali is treated as the original language.

And remember, this whole scene occurred because Ananda Marga did not have access to audio recording equipment in those early days.



SS-7 RECORDED ON REEL-TO-REEL MACHINES 1958

By the time Baba was delivering the discourses for SS parts 7 1958 then recording devices had come into vogue. So those discourses were recorded on reel-to-reel machines. In that case, whatever language in which Baba spoke remained the original language of the discourse. Because there was an actual audio recording. So those discourses were to be printed “as is”.



WHY BENGALI WAS TREATED AS THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE IN SS-2

With the introduction of recording devices, Baba was able to direct His precious time to other pursuits like organisational reporting etc, since He no longer had to endure hours and days of editing work with those who had partially noted down His discourses.

For all these reasons, at the beginning of the Bengali and Hindi editions of Subhasita Samgraha part 2, Baba has inserted an Author’s Note stating that the discourses were originally delivered in Hindi but had been updated in Bengali. For this reason, for parts 2 – 6, parts of the Subhasita Samgraha series, Baba had expounded on the topic in Bengali. Thus Bengali is treated as the original language. But that is only because in Ananda Marga we did not yet have audio recording devices



WHY AUTHOR’S NOTE IN SS-2

Here is why the Author's Note in Subhasita Samgraha part 2 states that the Bengali is now the original version of this book.

1. There was no audio recording of the original Hindi delivered at the DMC that time because such machines were not yet available in Ananda Marga.

2. Those taking notes when Baba delivered the discourse in Hindi – i.e. Har Govind Mandal ji and Sushil Dhar ji – could not properly write everything down.

3. Baba worked with a dictation team whose mother tongue was Bengali to finalise the discourses.

4. Baba had to expound greatly on the topic as their Bengali notes were just bits and pieces of what Baba had actually spoken. There were many points that were lost and not noted by those note-takers during the original Hindi discourse.

5. This was done only because those days they did not have the means in Ananda Marga to make an audio recording of Baba’s original discourse. Thus, the SS-2 Author's Note states that Bengali is the original version.

So again, it was only in this unique instance, regarding Subhasita Samgraha parts 2 – 6, that Baba told that the original should be Bengali. Naturally, as soon as discourses began being audio recorded at DMC, then the original language was always maintained.

Thus Subhasita Samgraha series parts 2 – 6 do not stand as a precedent. Rather this was an exception to the norm and the proof is that Baba Himself inserted an Author’s Note to clarify the matter.



WHY IT IS LINGUISTIC CHAUVINISM

Once the discourses began being recorded via audio reels or cassettes, Baba ordered that the original audio recorded version stand as the mother copy and all translations were made from that original language.

But now opportunists are taking over and painting everything in the colour of Bangalisation – by making the ridiculous claim that the Bengali version should be looked upon as the original for every discourse, even if it was recorded and given by Baba in another language. This is their ludicrous proposition. Obviously it is wrong and against Baba’s order.

So there is no value to the claim that Bengali should always be treated as the original language for all of Baba’s discourses. This is 100% false.

We must have this weapon in mind to fight against discourse theft. That is the only way to save our discourses from linguistic chauvinism.

Note 1: NAGINAJI AND PROF INDRADEVA GUPTA - NOTED DOWN

For all the discourses in Subhasita Samgraha parts 1, Baba originally delivered those pravacans in Hindi.

Because native Hindi speakers – i.e. Naginaji and Prof Indradeva Gupta - noted down the DMC discourses for Subhasita Samgraha-1, there is no Author’s note like SS-2. Because for SS-1, Baba delivered the discourse in Hindi, reviewed their notes in Hindi, and did final review in Hindi.



Note 2: MISUNDERSTANDING of PRS “B”

One Dada is confused about Sadguru Baba's discourses. Dadaji thinks that any Hindi discourse given by Baba could be labeled an original Bengali discourse. But that is wrong.

All who read the above letter carefully understand that this only occurred with select Hindi discourses from Subhasita Samgraha parts 2 - 6. Beyond this limited periphery it never happened.

But Dadaji does not like to understand this fact. Most probably because he is a proponent of Bangalisation. Sadly, Dadaji is blinded by that narrow-minded sentiment. So even when a full, rational explanation is given then he cannot grasp the point. Because already his mind is dyed in the colour of Bangalisation.

The Dadaji who is confused in this way is Ac Raviishananda Avt. If you see Dada kindly explain all these points to him personally. Apparently he is unable to learn via email; some can learn this way, but not him; he needs face-to-face contact. So when you see Dada Raviishananda kindly do the needful.

Addendum Sound File: The Meaning of the Word "Yoga" - Hindi - AV13-09

The discourse "The Meaning of the Word 'Yoga'" was given by Baba in Hindi, June 30 1979, in Patna. However in the latest (2011) edition of AV13, the Tiljala Publishers printed in the Publisher's Note,


“The Meaning of the Word 'Yoga'?”. Discourse in Bengali. Tape. Originally published in Bengali as “Yoga Kii?” in Ánanda Vacanámrtam 13, 1980. Tr. from the original Bengali by Dr. Aditya Kumar Mohanty. (Ánanda Vacanámrtam (2011), part 13, Publisher’s Note, p.xxiii)

So the Tiljala Publishers are claiming Baba has given the discourse in Bengali.

(a) One great devotee recently sent a copy of the original sound file of the final section of Bábá's discourse Rudra Gotra.(1) That has made the below As-Is transcription of this original sound file possible.

(b) This discourse, Rudra Gotra, was also printed by Tiljala Publications as Subhasita Samgraha Part 25, chapter 8 in the 2000 edition.

(c) Now, for the first time, please find an "As-Is" transcription of Bábá's original sound file of this discourse - Rudra Gotra.

Following is the "As-Is" transcription of the original sound file of this final section of the discourse "Rudra Gotra".





Note: You might have noticed that In the "As-Is" transcription, there are a few sections enclosed in {curly brackets}. These bracketed sections denote misspoken words that were discarded by the speaker Himself, i.e. Marga Guru. For your ease, you may disregard these bracketed sections when reading the transcription.

Those bracketed sections have been kept intact as an official record. That way - when comparing with the original sound file - the "As-Is" version stands as a complete record of every word and syllable spoken by Guru.

Also note that square brackets [  ] in the text are used to indicate insertions by the editors. Anything spoken by Margiis during the discourse, is also placed in square brackets. Such as ["बाबा, बाबा, बाबा !"].

Here are the next four pages of the "As-Is" transcription of this final section of the discourse "Rudra Gotra":









So the above six pages are the "As-Is" transcription of that final section of Guru's discourse, "Rudra Gotra." (1) These pages correspond exactly to every word spoken by Bábá on the sound file, which is downloadable as mentioned above at this link.

Next is something completely different: Tiljala Publications' printed version of that same section in Subhasita Samgraha Part 25 (2000), chapter 8, pages 108-109.

The section of text below demarcated by the red lines is how Tiljala Publications printed the same final section of the discourse. (1) Any reader can easily see that the above "As-Is" version ​is over four times as long what Tiljala Publications printed below.

Indeed, Bábá spoke 1442 words in this final section of the discourse. Every one of those words you will find in the above As-Is transcription. Whereas below in Tiljala Publications' printing of the same section of the recording, there are only 349 words.

Thus, it is immediately apparent that there is a large difference in the amount of text. Both are renditions of the final twelve minutes of the recorded discourse. However the above "As-Is" version presents every single word Bábá spoke. Whereas the scan below of what Tiljala Publications printed is a mere summary of what Bábá spoke. Therefore much has been left out, and what small amount is included is mostly a paraphrased summary written by the Tiljala Publishers. In the end, what Tiljala published is not Guru's exact words.






In comparing the "As-Is" transcription with the text of Tiljala's printed book, all will easily see that the Tiljala Publishers have not presented what Bábá actually said. Please download the sound file at this link, and add it into your collection. If you understand Hindi, then compare the versions for yourself. If you do not know Hindi, it is enough to visually inspect the six pages of the "As-Is" transcription compared with the small amount of printed text published by Tiljala. The difference is astonishing.

Sadly, Tiljala Publications have distorted our Ánanda Márga scripture in the following ways:
(1) Failure to present all Guru has said;
(2) Failure to transcribe in "As-Is" fashion;
(3) Changing and rewriting Guru's words as a mere summary of what He actually spoke.



Ánanda Marga Scripture Not Being Protected

Therefore Responsibility Falls to Ánanda Má́rgiis

Bábá says, “The scriptures containing spiritual injunctions must be totally flawless.” (Namah Shiváya Shántáya, Disc: 14) So as Ánanda Márgiis, we must take this very seriously and work together to make the printed version of Bábá's discourses perfect. By such examples as the above, it becomes clear we cannot merely sit back and expect that with time the Tiljala Publishers will fix everything. Forty-five years have passed since Bábá delivered this discourse in 1969, with no sign of any work to fix it going on. The Tiljala group whatever they spend all their time and resources on these days, if instead they had utilized these in fixing Bábá's discourses, then their efforts would have been worthwhile. When our Publishers are wasting their time and money in self-serving pursuits such as group fighting, then it falls upon Ánanda Má́rgiis to come forward, create pressure for change, and help in the rectification of our scripture.


Must Not Delay Repair of Scripture

Such distortion and extreme summarizing as seen in the above Rudra Gotra publication is of vital importance and must be repaired without delay. The very survival of Ánanda Márga ideology as guiding light for the suffering humanity depends on this.

Bábá says, "When the sole purpose of scripture, i.e. dharmashástra is to establish the human beings in the stable, exalted position of spiritual ideation, it must be practical, rational, infallible and universal. It must be based on deep eternal truths. It must be ápta vákya. A scripture is a guided entity." (Tattva Kaomudii - 2)

1. "Final Section"= In the course of recording Bábá's discourse, as well as in the course of the years that followed, discourses sometimes got broken up into sections. This sound file is of a section of the discourse Rudra Gotra-- in particular the final 12 minutes of the discourse. Rudra was published in Subhasita Samgraha Part 25, chapter 8 (Hindi). The sound file corresponds to the section in the publication running from page 108 midway through para 1 ["वह भी शिव ही है..."], to the end of the discourse on the following page. This is depicted in the above scan from the publication.


NOTES ABOUT H GROUP— It is regrettable that H and EC groups have no interest in Bábá’s discourses, otherwise they would have become active in publishing them from the original sound track instead of merely reprinting the books which the Tiljala group publishes. The distortions introduced by Tiljala group in their publications of Bábá’s discourses are errors of commissional in nature. But let none make the mistake of thinking that H and EC groups are innocent here; by their failure to take interest in publishing Bábá’s original discourses, they demonstrate a lethargy toward Bábá’s shástra which is highly condemnable. H and EC groups’ failure to publish Bábá’s original discourses is a failure of omission. The omissional error of H and EC is every bit as serious as the commissional errors of Tiljala group. And moreover, H group's publishing department merely reprints the distortion-laden, error-filled books made by Tiljala group, and puts their stamp on it. So they are supporting and participating in the sins of Tiljala group.



Fix Bábá's Discourses Now or Never

If we remain passive onlookers and do not fix the negative trends of introducing distortion into Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrtiji's discourses and do not bring the printed discourses up to the proper standard now, it will become impossible to change this in the future. And even if in future some sincere Ánanda Márgiis will try, they will be treated as enemies. Because this is the way religion works. Today one cannot teach the devotees of Lord Krśńa that He has nothing to do with cows; they will never believe it. In the same way, Ánanda Márgiis will become used to the wrong teachings in our AM books and they will not like to give them up. They will think that whatever was there at the end of the twentieth century, that was the gold standard for all time. And it should be kept and maintained. So we don't have any time: it is either now or never. The clock is ticking: If we do not get Bábá's discourses fixed now, it will be impossible to do so later. And that will cause bloodshed and more division on the basis of the various versions of Bábá's teachings and their explanations. History bears testimony to this, that all the religions have similarly broken into multiple factions, groups and subgroups on the basis of differences in scripture interpretations. Bábá wanted to eliminate such problems, and that is why Bábá's discourses are recorded. But unfortunately, those recordings are not being published properly. This matter is very serious.
