Namaskár,

I wrote earlier about the disappointing discovery that the first two paragraphs are missing from the Tiljala Group's publication of a discourse I was listening to from my collection. (1, 2) This discourse is in both English and Hindi, with the first two paragraphs in English and the remainder in Hindi.

After giving the first two paragraphs in English, Bábá says in Hindi into the microphone before all that, “This English section should be translated into Hindi, and the rest of the discourse I will present in Hindi.” To my shock and dismay, despite Bábá's directive our AMPS Kolkata Publishers have discarded those first two English paragraphs from the printed discourse.

Despite instructions from Bábá verbally issued before all present as well as documented by recording, these very instructions were not followed by the Tiljala Publishers. When I realized this, I became concerned as to how our Publishers treated the rest of the discourse.

Opening Hindi Paragraph A Disaster

The rest of the discourse, given in Hindi, contains a number of serious distortions as well. Those distortions have been collected, and the remainder will be presented as separate postings later. But suffice to give one ominous example now, from the first Hindi paragraph.

I will translate here for you the first four sentences Bábá delivered in Hindi:

“It is seen that in individual life, with even a wee bit of effort a human being will surely get mukti or mokśa. But in collective life, the creation will never come to an end. And underlying this fact that the creation will never end, are two reasons. One is logical cum scientific, and the other is sentimental.”

For those knowing Hindi, here is the actual, word-for-word transcription of what Bábá states in Hindi on the recording:

"अब देखा जाए कि वैयष्टिक जीवन में हर मनुष्य अगर थोड़ी-सी कोशिश करते हैं, तो उन्हें मुक्ति अवश्य मिलेगी, मोक्ष अवश्य मिलेगा | सामूहिक जीवन में सृष्टि का ख़ातमा कभी नहीं होगा | ख़ातमा क्यों नहीं होगा, इसके पीछे भी दो कारण हैं | एक logical cum scientific और एक है sentimental |

What you have just read above is the “As Is” transcription of what Bábá states on the recording.

Tiljala Publishers' Rendition of Hindi Opening Paragraph

A Mockery of What Bábá Actually Stated

Here below I have translated what our Tiljala Publications printed in place of those very above lines:

“It is seen that in individual life, with even a wee bit of effort a human being will surely get mukti or mokśa. In social life, laziness should be destroyed—of course it will be destroyed. Behind this are two reasons: logical scientific, and sentimental logical.”

For those knowing Hindi, here are the very lines as printed in the book Ánanda Vacanámrtam 20 (H):

"देखा जाता है वैयक्ति (sic)जीवन में हर मनुष्य अगर थोड़ि सी कोशिश करते हैं तो उन्हें मुक्ति अवश्य मिलेगी, मोक्ष्य अवश्य मिलेगा | सामाजिक जीवन में आलस्य का विनाश करना चाहिए विनाश क्यों नहीं होगा ? इसके पीछे भी दो कारण हैं एक तर्क सम्मत वैज्ञानिक और दूसरा भावात्मक तर्क सम्मत |”

Entire Opening of Discourse: Unacceptable.

Must Be Fixed

The opening of this discourse contains several obvious and egregious distortions. First of all the two English paragraphs are left out, and those should have been the opening two paragraphs of the discourse. Then, what is printed by AMPS is worlds apart from what Bábá spoke. Bábá says on the recording that “In collective life the creation will never come to an end.” In place of this very sentence, our AMPS Publishers wrote instead that, “In social life, laziness should be destroyed—of course it will be destroyed.”

Bábá explains that there are two reasons for why the creation will never come to an end: One is logical cum scientific, and the other is sentimental. Our AMPS Publishers wrote that there are two reasons why laziness should be destroyed in social life: logical scientific, and sentimental logical.

Here to top it off, the two reasons Bábá actually gives in English—and the Publishers took the liberty of translating these terms into Hindi where Bábá has Himself preferred English even during an otherwise Hindi discourse. And they translated the second term wrong at that, adding the phrase “logical” together with “sentimental” where only “sentimental” was called for.

All in all this printed discourse is a disaster. The Publishers discarded the first two paragraphs of the discourse. And the transcription of the opening paragraphs in Hindi are a catastrophe. This is only the opening paragraph. The remainder of the distortions in this discourse will be presented in a subsequent posting.

Keep in mind that this discourse was printed for the first time in 1981. Then it was printed again in 1994, thirteen years later—without any effort to repair the nauseating distortions contained therein. And further, now in 2013 another ten years have passed, with no sign of any effort to repair this unacceptable publication.

Improper Scripture Leads to Division

Bábá has explained how the lack of any shástra given directly by the Buddha led to disagreement among His followers as to what the Buddha's teachings were. That in turn led to schism among the ranks and ultimate division into hundreds of Buddhist sects each with their own beliefs as to what Buddha's teachings really are.

In this connection Baba says, "One important thing has to be mentioned. Buddhism, three hundred years after the death of Buddha, was clearly divided into two groups, (1) Mahásaḿghik, and (2) Sthavirvádii or Theravádii." (3)

So we Ánanda Márgiis should understand that if we allow our scripture to remain distorted, that distorted scripture will be the cause of more and more division and splintering among Ánanda Márgiis—as it has been with every religion of the world.

Distorted Scripture is the Cause of Schism

Proper Scripture is the Cause of Unity

In the religions of the world, long after, sometimes hundreds of years after a seer or sage—Christ, Buddha, Mohammad—left the world, their followers wrote down what they thought He said. And there was disagreement about it, which only flourished and caused division into sects. Bábá's shástra is different from that of the religions of the world because He has Himself dictated it. And yet despite this, the same schisms as happened in the religions, will go on escalating in Ánanda Márga as well if we do not clean our shástra.

Division into sects has happened with every religious and spiritual movement in the history of humanity. THE difference in Ánanda Márga is that Bábá is Táraka Brahma and He has dictated His own scripture. But that has to be protected from distortion or it will lose its functional value. It is the duty of Ánanda Márgiis throughout the world to see to it that our Ánanda Márga shástra remains intact, pure, flawless. It is the cause of our unity for ages to come.
